It turns out that 20th Century Fox had considered using a subtitle for the sequel, calling it How to Train Your Dragon: Secrets of the Ice Cave. The title didn't stick, and they instead just added the "2" onto the end instead. Universal isn't feeling as cautious, and went with the subtitle instead of the basic "3".

Though the franchise continues to pass hands between studios, Universal has promised that this will in fact close out the trilogy.

While the first trailer for The Hidden World showcased some cool updated action, we are instead given something that tries to focus on the story. The plot makes sense, and we are given a human villain that can amount to the downfall of dragons as a whole. It feels like something that could be a solid conclusion, but it is still not feeling as polished as the first installment was. Side note: A favorite of mine.

It's almost as if Universal is sort of unsure on how to market the film. The studio instead plays it safe by showcasing goofy dragon antics that should please younger audiences. A safe target, for sure, but hoping there is more beneath the surface here.
