Once hailed as the Golden Gate of Socialism, the small Slovakian town of Cierna nad Tisou, situated on the border with Ukraine, is the picture-postcard image of post-Soviet decay. What used to be a major rail hub is now a forgotten place where unemployment and smuggling are rampant. In front of the ironically named Hotel Sunrise, the local Communist Party is looking for members, but residents are too busy navigating the dysfunctional system and finding ways to forget their harsh realities. A gambling addict refuses to pay alimony, while a young father of four desperately looks for his partner who mysteriously disappeared. Meanwhile, a third man would probably be content with his life if he could only lose a little weight.… Focusing on the emotional life of her protagonists rather than their socioeconomic conditions, Mária Rumanová draws a vivid portrayal of life on the edge of the European Union.
