Trailer for Girl Flu.
Bird (Jade Pettyjohn in a breakthrough performance) is a precocious 12-year-old girl coasting through childhood on autopilot until the arrival of her first period thrusts her into unwanted womanhood. However, this life-changing event brings even more upheaval for her mother Jenny (Katee Sackhoff, TV’s Battlestar Galactica), a capricious mess of a woman who is more interested in getting high and hanging out with her boyfriend (Jeremy Sisto, Six Feet Under) than being a proper parent. All but left to her own devices (except for a hilariously helpful supporting turn from Heather Matarazzo) Bird is forced to navigate the perils and pitfalls of growing up fast in a world that makes little sense. Written and directed with a fierce wit and heartfelt humor by first-time director Dorie Barton, Girl Flu is an all-too-rare coming-of-age story that focuses on the triumphs and tragedies of being a tween girl.
