Award-winning filmmaker Maya Newell returns to Hot Docs with a powerful film of four extraordinary children, all between the ages of 11 and 12, growing up with same-sex parents. Gus, whose obsession with wrestling causes great strife with his mother; Ebony, a budding pop star in the suburbs; Matt, attempting to understand his mother’s commitment to the church that condemns her lifestyle; and Graham, neglected so badly by his birth parents that he can barely read at age of 11. Together, and with the loving support of their parents, they cope with their own challenges of growing up that are further complicated with the shadow cast by societal stereotypes on same-sex parenting. Having also grown up with same-sex parents, Newell captures some of the most debated contemporary issues today, giving a rare and intimate look at same-sex parenting through the eyes of the children.
