In a post-apocalyptic world, where water and gasoline have long since dried-up, a prince from the oasis (one of the last known safe-havens) must venture out to find medicine for the ailing queen (Lucy Liu), but along the way he gets mixed up with the warlord (James Franco) and his robot Ash (Suki Waterhouse), which leads to a daring journey through the desolate wastelands.
The film promotes itself with the tagline, "by James Franco." So just how involved was the actor. Well, besides playing a lead role, he also produced and co-directed. If you think it's odd that Franco got behind the camera for this apocalyptic adventure, know that he has actually directed dozens of projects.
Not sure what to think here. James Franco really goes for it when it comes to playing over the top or eccentric characters -- which I can respect -- but sometimes I'm too distracted by how odd he is. The whole premise seems cool, sort of like Resident Evil meets Mad Max. But, there is a low budget vibe I just can't see beyond. Perhaps if Lionsgate would risk a red band trailer we can get a better idea of the film's true potential.
