As for Four, the film takes place on a hot Fourth of July night. Joe, a middle-aged married black man is out on an awkward date with June, a young white man he picked up on the internet. Joe's 16 year-old daughter, Abigayle, is left at home, yet again, to tend to the house and her ill mother. Rather than stay home for the night, Abigayle decides to go out on a date with Dexter, a former high school basketball player whose best days are behind him. Throughout the course of the night, the characters reach out to each other, in search of an elusive connection that will allow them to feel anything beyond the loneliness they feel in their everyday lives, which forces them to confront some inconvenient hard truths in the process.
