In Flatliners, five medical students, obsessed by the mystery of what lies beyond the confines of life, embark on a daring and dangerous experiment: by stopping their hearts for short periods of time, each triggers a near-death experience – giving them a firsthand account of the afterlife. But as their experiments become increasingly dangerous, they are each haunted by the sins of their pasts, brought on by the paranormal consequences of trespassing to the other side.

While most people think this film is a remake if the film of the same name, Flatliners, back in 1990 starring Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon, Julia Roberts and William Baldwin...it is actually a sequel. Kiefer Sutherland is the only actor from the original film that has committed to come back to play a role...that we know of.

While Director Niels Arden Oplev has mostly worked on TV shows, you should recognize some of the feature films he has directed:

The original Writer for Flatliners (1990), Peter Filardi, returns to help write the script for this film.

I must say that this is quite confusing, this film is a sequel and not a remake...then why give the film the same exact name?

Given that the first film had such a stellar cast Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon, Julia Roberts and William Baldwin (well maybe minus Baldwin), I am sure they felt the pressure to bring in another suitable cast her too. But, there is just no comparison. I do like Ellen Page a lot and think she will shine in this role and Diego Luna has a chance here, but the others I think will fall flat.

I must admit that based on this trailer, the film looks much more intense than I was expecting and the science fiction aspect is taken to a new level with the cg capabilities of today compared to 1990. But I fell like they gave a lot here in this trailer and I just hope they left some surprises for the actual film.
