Dark Phoenix Trailer (2019)
Trailer for Dark Phoenix, starring Evan Peters, Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy and Sophie Turner.
In Dark Phoenix, the X-Men face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite -- not only to save Jean's soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.
Being a big fan of Hans Zimmer, it was with great relief when the composer decided to come out of what is being called "superhero retirement" to compose the score for Dark Phoenix. And why did he come back? Well, it wasn't entirely willing, since Simon Kinberg had to do some heavy convincing. We can now assume that the film's darker plotline may have had something to do with it.
The film will take place in 1992, so period forward. It's somewhat of an important date, since the comicbook relaunch of X-Men kicked off in 1992 with brand new costumes. Notice the new costumes?
Wow! Much darker. But didn't the Dark Phoenix Saga have invaders or visitors come down from space? My information is limited to the animated series from the 90s, but could have swore the character's importance hit the tippety top once outsiders started showing up.
Besides my limited knowledge of how Dark Phoenix plays out, the film itself looks pretty good. I thought Days of Future Past was amazing while Apocalypse was just okay. Actually, a huge disappointment as a follow-up. But maybe this third installment can make everything right, especially now that Bryan Singer is out of the picture?
Hard to say, but definitely looking forward to see what 20th Century Fox has in store. And, considering the post production on Dark Phoenix has been pretty dang long, expect tons of visual effects in the next preview.
