Colossal Teaser Trailer (2017)
First teaser trailer for the sci-fi romp Colossal, starring Anne Hathaway, Jason Sudeikis, Dan Stevens, Austin Stowell and Tim Blake Nelson.
Gloria (Anne Hathaway) is a hard partying New York scene girl who is thrust into crisis when her boyfriend, Tim (Dan Stevens), grows sick of her antics and kicks her out of their apartment. With no other options, she moves back to her hometown and quickly regresses, drinking every night until last call and accepting a job at a bar owned by her childhood friend Oscar (Jason Sudeikis). One day she wakes up and blurrily finds out that Seoul was terrorized by a giant creature the night before. Eventually, Gloria begins to suspect her own drunken actions are bizarrely connected to the monster rampaging in South Korea.
Even before Colossal ever began filming, it was quickly hit with a lawsuit. Showing some thin skin -- or a need for some extra skrilla -- Toho quickly brought a lawsuit against Voltage Pictures. For what? Well, if you know of Toho's background, it would be obvious that they don't like the idea of a Godzilla-like creature making for comedy. A settlement was reached in a timely manner, and production went forward unfazed.
If you were left scratching your head when the distributor was revealed as "NEON", you are not alone. The film was acquired by said company out of Sundance Film Festival, which revealed that Tom Quinn and Tim League were behind the (surprise) new company.
Most likely a good investment, considering that the film currently qualifies as Certified Fresh on RottenTomatoes.
Considering that he film is expected out in the next few months, I have to admit that I'm a bit surprised that it has taken so long for a trailer to show up for Colossal. And this is only a teaser trailer that doesn't show much. We know the film is complete, it's ready for distribution, so not sure why a teaser was even necessary at this point. Don't get me wrong, we appreciate a good teaser, which this is, but it's about time for the real thing.
That being said, there is a lot to like within the minimal footage shown. Taking a very unique approach to the monster genre, it looks like Colossal could also provide a number of laughs. Especially when you factor in names such as Anne Hathaway, Dan Stevens and Jason Sudeikis. With the help of Tim Blake Nelson and Austin Stowell, the film entirely rests on their shoulders.
Can't wait to see what this so-called Neon has in store in future trailers.
