City of Lies Trailer (2018)
Trailer for City of Lies, starring Johnny Depp, Forest Whitaker, Toby Huss, Dayton Callie and Neil Brown Jr.
Based on the true story of one of the most notorious and unsolved cases in recent time, City of Lies is a provocative thriller revealing a never-before-seen look at the infamous murder of The Notorious B.I.G. shortly following the death of Tupac. L.A.P.D. detective Russell Poole (Johnny Depp) has spent years trying to solve his biggest case, but after two decades, the investigation remains open. "Jack" Jackson (Forest Whitaker), a reporter desperate to save his reputation and career, is determined to find out why. In search of the truth, the two team up and unravel a growing web of institutional corruption and lies. Relentless in their hunt, these two determined men threaten to uncover the conspiracy and crack the foundation of the L.A.P.D. and an entire city.
The script for City of Lies found its way onto the 2015 Hollywood Blacklist. If you've never heard of this, it's a category of "most liked" unmade scripts of the year.
The role of Russell Poole, played by Johnny Depp, was almost played by Sylvester Stallone. While the difference of look sounds crazy, Depp's recent drop in popularity has hurt his ability to avoid reallife drama while taking on new roles.
Meh. Considering how strong the cast is and the reallife story that it's all based on, I'm surprised about how boring this first preview comes across. There does seem to be a bit of cop on cop action -- sounds porn-ish I know -- but now I'm wondering if that was more creative license rather than the "real life" part.
Not sure what's off here, but definitely will be skipping this one in theaters.
