Blood Father is based on a book of the same name, by Peter Craig. Peter is also the author of "Hot Plastic".

Principal photography began on June 5, 2014, in Albuquerque, New Mexico and after just a month of shooting, the production wrapped up on July 3, 2014.

In December 2014, Lionsgate acquired the US rights to the film.

Blood Father had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on 21 May 2016.

A pretty good trailer for what looks like a somewhat pretty good film. Based on the trailers, this film has a low budget feel of a film that would go straight to VOD. If you take out Mel Gibson, this film would not get nearly the amount of attention it has received so far.

There must be a reason why it has taken Lionsgate a year and half to get this film to theaters, and the reason is almost always not a good one.

The one thing this film has going for it is the storyline which forces the two characters together...an estranged father-daughter relationship collides when daughter is in a desperate situation and an ex-con father comes to the rescue in bad ass fashion. While this sounds promising, the action looks just okay and I can almost envision many slow points in between the few action scenes. Will be skiping this one for now and may catch it on demand.
