From visionary filmmaker Spike Lee comes the incredible true story of an American hero. It’s the early 1970s, and Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) is the first African-American detective to serve in the Colorado Springs Police Department. Determined to make a name for himself, Stallworth bravely sets out on a dangerous mission: infiltrate and expose the Ku Klux Klan. The young detective soon recruits a more seasoned colleague, Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver), into the undercover investigation of a lifetime. Together, they team up to take down the extremist hate group as the organization aims to sanitize its violent rhetoric to appeal to the mainstream.
If you were to look at the film's cost, you would quickly spot the name John David Washington. Now, you wouldn't be blamed for assuming that this guy could be the son of Denzel Washington. And you'd be right! John David Washington has been making a name for himself in front of the camera for HBO's popular series Ballers.
A film like this is very dependent on the make up of the cast. Which, fortunately, is incredible. First you have John David Washington, who has so much charisma he could carry a film by himself. But there is also Adam Driver supporting him, and he's never looked as comfortable in front of the camera. And, as icing on the cake, we have Topher Grace as David Duke. Seriously, who was the casting agent on this? Incredible!
And, as expected from this sort of buddy cop drama, the film looks like a ton of fun.
