A third world away from the glamour of Europe’s fashion scene, an enterprising designer dreams of showing her gowns on Paris runways. Young and determined, Bintou runs a successful dressmaking business in Burkina Faso, seemingly day and night. Catering to mainly rich white ex-pats and foreigners who never haggle over her prices, Bintou quickly whips up colourful frocks, delivering them by bike to their front doors. She still finds time to party with friends, shoot videos of her work and imitate characters from reality shows. You’d never know she has a seven-year-old daughter, born from a painful secret and growing up in a children’s home. But with a change in her child’s custody looming, new realities threaten to crush Bintou’s hard won efforts to really have it all. Caught between old and new, family and freedom, Bintou is a modern African workingwoman.
