Chris Shoeck, a trainer from New York City, feels like an outsider. But once he discovers the joys of bending steel, his loneliness lifts and he begins to experience a real sense of belonging as an old-school strongman. An awkward man with no innate ability to show off, little capacity to connect with others and a lack of support from his family, Chris is up against a lot more than just a two-inch piece of metal. Bending Steel follows Chris’s transformation from introverted amateur twisting rebar for his own amusement in a cramped basement storage unit, to professional “Wonder” Schoeck performing on the big stage at historic Coney Island. With the help of his mentor, Chris Rider, and a cast of living legends from the carnival community, he pushes past his comfort zone and beyond all expectations. Bending Steel is a touching and tenacious tale of mettle versus metal.
