The trailer for B1 which will make its North American debut at the 2010 Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival.

In the dignified sport of judo, practice, equality, discipline, loyalty, competitive drive, and strategy make a strong judoka—but what makes a champion? Shot over three months, this mesmerizing documentary captures the intense training of Antonio Tenório da Silva, a blind professional judo athlete, as he prepares to compete for his fourth Paralympic gold medal in Beijing. A judoka since 19, Tenório’s “smooth path” follows how his humble philosophy, work ethic, unwavering focus, and discipline motivate his now 37-year-old, 100-kilogram frame. At each stage, the film highlights the brotherhood of judo while showing how Tenório, at times, still faces prejudice for his impairment. The film artfully connects Tenório’s explosive fighting style to his tactical sensory approach, resulting in riveting and elegant combat sequences. B1 is a beautifully in-depth rendering of the physical, psychological, and emotional stamina of a tender fighter.
