Gareth Edwards Gives Insight on Rogue One Title Meaning

Every time news for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story breaks, it's hard not to get excited. Working to keep our expectations at a er, realistic level, we can only assume that this Star Wars installment will likely be the most unique to date. And possibly the darkest. Who knows! With a few trailers already available, it is still hard to guess what's in store for fans of the franchise. So let's get back to the basics. How did the production come up with the title, Rogue One?

Even without the feedback from director Gareth Edwards, Star Wars fans can assume some explanations for the title Rogue One. Going back to the Original Trilogy, we remember Red Squadron, who fought in the Battle of Yavin. A pivotal event that took place in A New Hope, the surviving members of Red Squadron went on to reappear as Rogue Group in The Empire Strikes Back. Later re-termed as Rogue Squadron, the military sect saw lots of love from the Star Wars extended universe in regards to video games, novels and comicbooks.

So the term "Rogue" is nothing new to this franchise. But Rogue Group didn't come into being until long after the events taking place in Rogue One. Gareth Edwards simplifies the theory to Empire, by explaining how this Star Wars installment is unique.

... This is the first film that's gone off-piste and is not part of the saga – or the Anakin story – so it's the 'rogue' one, you know?"

Or maybe it's Edwards himself? A rogue director taking the franchise in a new direction?

"I don't know... I never see myself that way. But, er... that'd be cool! We tried to do things different, for sure."

Or perhaps the title refers entirely to the character Jyn Erso, as played by Felicity Jones. Director Edwards acknowledges the character as a possible source for the title, and the trailer alludes that she has no problem becoming a mole. Or, possibly worse, defecting to the other side.

"It's kind of describing [Jyn Erso] as well in a similar way," says Edwards. "It has [all] these split, multiple meanings that made it feel like the right choice.

What we do know is that Jyn Erso has an important parent. If you've watched all the trailers, then you already know who it is. We also know that she is going to be seen wearing some Empire garb, but that doesn't mean she's switched sides. We prefer to think the outfit is to enable her to infiltrate the Empire as an enlisted soldier. There is also the planet Jedha. It's been told that this location is important in regards to the Force, so may be something there.

Obviously, we still don't know much in regards to the plot save for the shell of a story that was first mentioned in 1997 during A New Hope. With a few more months to wait, we can expect a whole bunch more media for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. It all comes down to how much you want to know, or not.

Without providing spoilers, let us know why you think the title is so important.
