Fences Pair Denzel and Davis Big Winners At The 2017 SAG Awards

Is this a sign that Hollywood are finally going to give African American actors their due recognition, or will it end up being a lone gesture? The Screen Actors Guild Awards were held on Sunday night and while the big names were out in force, it would be the stars of productions like Fences, Hidden Figures and Moonlight that took home the big prizes.

The politically charged evening saw the best from film and television come under the one banner, acknowledging those who achieved excellence in the year of 2016. With Emma Stone beating out Amy Adams, Meryl Streep, Natalie Portman and Emily Blunt, as Denzel Washington overcame favorites Casey Affleck and Ryan Gosling, perhaps a few more surprises will be in store when the Oscars come along in February.

Immigration Ban Front of Mind For Winners

The 56-year old Seinfeld star might have cleaned up for her role in the hit television series Veep, but that only proved the start of what Julia Louis Dreyfus would provide on stage. Doing her own Donald Trump rendition, the actress pivoted from poking fun at the president to outlining a more serious point about the immigration ban.

“Whether the Russians did or did not hack the voting of tonight’s SAG Awards. I'm the winner, the winner is me, by a landslide!" proclaimed Dreyfus. "On a less insane note, I want you all to know that I am the daughter of an immigrant. My father fled religious persecution in Nazi-occupied France, and I’m an American patriot, and I love this country, and because I love this country by am horrified by its blemishes. This immigrant ban is a blemish and it is un-American.”
