Casting for the upcoming Han Solo Star Wars stand alone film just took a big leap forward. We already have our Han, but who's his favorite space pirate? The debonair Lando Calrissian! And who to play the smooth talking, yet-to-be administrator of Cloud City? None other than Donald Glover! Who? Well, if you have not seen The Martian, nor watch Community and Atlanta, he may be a newcomer for you. Sure, he's got a ton of other roles, but you might never have put the name to the face. And, no, he's not Danny Glover's son. Racist.
Donald Glover Cast for Hano Solo Film
Walt Disney Pictures made the announcement on StarWars.com. Disney could have put some icing on the cake by giving us an official title. Or a working title maybe? But no, we have to continue calling the production the Han Solo stand-alone movie. Typically we call these "solo" movies, but how does this run off your tongue? The Han Solo solo movie. Actually, it's pretty sweet. But I digress.
Here's the announcement from Disney and LucasFilm.
Lucasfilm announced today that Donald Glover, an acclaimed actor, award-winning writer, and Grammy-nominated artist, will be playing the part of Lando Calrissian in the still-untitled Han Solo Star Wars film, helmed by directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Glover will join Alden Ehrenreich -- previously cast as Han Solo -- in bringing two iconic Star Wars characters back to the big screen, but at a time in their lives previously unexplored. This new film depicts Lando in his formative years as a scoundrel on the rise in the galaxy's underworld -- years before the events involving Han, Leia, and Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back and his rise to Rebel hero in Return of the Jedi.
Is Donald Glover is up to the task of playing a swashbuckling scoundrel? From what we've seen so far from the actor, We like it, and so do the film's directors.
“We're so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us,” said Lord and Miller. “These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we'd like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.”

Donald Glover is piggy backing not one but two huge film franchises. Both of which should easily make him a household name. Besides playing Lando Calrissian, the actor also landed a role in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Though the actor's role is still unknown, it is likely important. The current guesses include Hobie Brown, Jefferson Davis, Aaron Davis, Eddie Brock, Robbie Robertson, Max Modell, Ned Leeds and Miles Morales. So, obvi, lots of possibilities there.
