Director Jon Watts In Talks To Helm Spider-Man: Homecoming Sequel

Prior to 2017, few had considered Jon Watts a serious director in his own right. The 36-year old oversaw titles such as Clown and Cop Car. But it would be Sony's bold choice that allowed the filmmaker to branch forth with Spider-Man: Homecoming, a film that continues to score big with critics and audiences alike to soar past $480m at the box office.

The Marvel sequel might not have an official title yet, but that has not stopped the studio from securing their man for the follow up that is sure to carry the weight of expectation. The news comes courtesy of THR who say that Watts and his team have 24 months to make the project a success.

"Sony and Marvel are staying in business with director Jon Watts," they report. "Watts is in talks to return for the sequel to the hit Spidey film, starring Tom Holland. The follow-up, currently untitled, is already slated for release on July 5, 2019. "

The Black and Red Parker Peter Could Have Sported

Designer and concept artist Ryan Meinerding took to social media to showcase what the studio could have used to make their new and improved Spidey for this year's blockbuster. As opposed to the classic blue and red that Tom Holland sported, Meinerding illustrated a dark black backdrop to his outfit with silver cuffs attached to his wrists.

The draft was obviously passed over as the tone of the movie went for a lighter take, although it is yet to be known if this design could be reused for the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel. Something that will show Parker grow and develop with his character. Perhaps too much black might be clashing with Sony's other spinoff ventures, with the likes of Venom and Silver & Black going dark with their costumes.

Either the photoshop artists have been at it again, or fans have seen a first glimpse of Doctor Strange and Spider-Man working side by side for 2018's Avengers: Infinity War. Posted by avengers_cast, the camera grab is clearly in need of a CGI touchup as Holland looks towards a skyward Strange flying through the air.

A teaser trailer of the ensemble flick was said to be shown exclusively at D23 Expo over the weekend, leaving some insiders to recap all the action that was cut down. With Thanos believed to have a few of the superheroes in serious peril, the unlikely pairing of Englishmen Holland and Benedict Cumberbatch is sure to be a headline act for this feature.
