Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet wanted practical effects for the scene in which the Newborn is sucked through a small hole in a window into space. He wanted the head to be the final image, first stripped of skin and then the skull shattering as it disappeared into space. That was a whole lotta' Newborn to make disappear. Here are the first tests that, despite the shaky wall mock-up, had us moving in the right direction. A network of wires attached to a pre-scored skin went first, followed by a pre-scored and delicate skull rigged with an even more complex spiderweb of wires to shatter and pull pieces through the hole.
