A Moment in the Reeds, Mikko’s debut feature, is also a response to the lack of queer narrative in Finnish cinema and places the long marginalized voices of sexual ethnic minorities centre-stage in this intensely heartfelt drama about the search for freedom, acceptance and a place to call home. Significantly, with the film tackling many urgent issues about asylum seekers and racism, it boldly casts Boodi Kabanni, the first openly gay Syrian actor who is himself an immigrant to Finland.
