Excerpt from the documentary Weekend of a Champion.
In 1971, Formula One racing was one of the most dangerous sports in the world, and Scotsman Jackie Stewart was its champion. Worshipped for his on-track prowess, he garnered a rock star following as he toured the competition circuit. Rosemary's Baby helmer Roman Polanski was among his fans.
Seemingly intrigued by the risk of the sport and by people who voluntarily put themselves in danger, the director trailed the driver over the weekend of the 29th Monaco Grand Prix, under the gaze of filmmaker Frank Simon. The methodology and mechanics of motoring furnished their conversations, but it's their rapport that shines amongst fast and furious footage in glamorous 70s Monaco, with the result part informative racing documentary, part endearing odd-couple buddy movie.
