Note: They are supposed to travel faster than light (otherwise intersolar space travel in an adequate scope of time is just NOT possible). And I would say wiping out a planets population by pressing a single button is far easier than traveling faster than light. The only exception would be if "they" come from our or at least one of our near neighboring solar systems (which is just not likely - as things stands today).

Logical reasoning tells us that if an alien race was to make itself known and travel all the way to our world it would be purely for conquest ... and it would simply press a button to wipe us out - completely. I just can't believe that "they" (the filmmakers or whomever) always make alien-invasion-movies where the alien invaders (comming from outer space with technology that HAS TO BE millennia further advanced than ours) have to fight with "weapons" man to man against us. It is as if we would colonize another continent (nowadays) with dung forks.
