If aliens ever did come to earth and tried to destroy or enslave us and FAILED they would be fucked big time. And not just them, an event like that would, I think, lead to a version of humanity that would not tolerate any potential alien threat to itself. Maybe that is, in reality, the safest, most rational stance to take.
