Given that the film's premise is that of a foreign kid (whether black or white) being marginalized among his fellow adolescents (a theme common in both literature and reality, regardless of culture), the likelihood of this being a film with a negative message about either of the two races (see Simon6071) is speculative at-best and spurious at worst. Simon6071's comments about several of Will Smith's previous roles (that involved limited engagement of either the image of a white child or an actual one), notiwthstanding (comments which I regard as a real stretch to say the least), the theme in the new Karate Kid film appears to be overcoming one's outrage at injustice through the calm of discipline of a martial art (something Simon 6071 might do well to learn for himself after two pretty unnecessarily intense offerings here). While Simon6071 is right about the child's learning Kung Fu, and not Karate, he is (obviously) referred to as the Karate Kid in the film title for both marketing purposes (riding on the success of, and even gleaning from the story-line of the first version), and because he, the child, CAME to China having known only Karate - thus he would be ID'd in that fashion. It even occurred to me that perhaps the bullies might even taunt him for not knowing Kung Fu, by referring to him as The Karate Kid (might make an interesting twist as a feature to the film - 'just a thot). Anyway, get over it, Simon6071 - go with the flow - it's a story about friendship (tho I really do hope there's no intention on the part of the film makers to have this young adolescent boy have a 'love' interest in his classmate, beyond friendship - Lord, deliver us from Tween Culture!
