I actually *have* seen the film, and I've read and studied the original stories since I was a kid, so I can confirm (i) that this film is surprisingly faithful to the stories in all sorts of ways, large and small; (ii) that its portrayal of Holmes is not out of line with what we know from the books and stories; (iii) that it takes place after Holmes and Watson have known each other for seven years; (iv) that , as others have noted, Holmes was an expert boxer, a proficient martial-arts fighter and fencer; and (v) that there is mystery aplenty in this film, all of which Holmes expertly unravels while explaining his reasoning to us.
I found myself anticipating the mistakes that pompous know-it-all types would make (Holmes wasn't a boxer, Holmes wasn't a martial-arts guy), thereby proving that they just didn't know what they were talking about, but I didn't expect to get the proof this soon.
