Writer/director/star Nadine Labaki follows her debut Caramel with this wonderful film, a hit both at home and overseas (it won the audience award at Toronto) on the strength of a clever mix of melodrama, musical and daring social satire. Labaki has been called the Lebanese Pedro Almódovar due to her boisterous, colourful visual style and strong, nuanced female leads - all the more poignant when set in a region torn by sectarian strife. Desperate to end the bloodshed and tragedy, the wily women of a mountain village cross religious boundaries, band together and scheme behind their men's backs to keep the peace by any pragmatic or comic means - whether sneaking hash into homemade pastries or bussing in Ukrainian dancing girls as a distraction. Gently raunchy and irreverent, packed with charm and emotion, Where Do We Go Now? is a spirited, life-affirming treat.
