ThingThis is a movie that with current technology can only be improved on. The purist who say it shouldn't be remaid are wrong. The story is a good one regardless of the decade and with CGI it can only improve.

originalDo all those people who say they love the "original" know that the "original" was in black and white and called "The Thing From Another Planet"? John Carpenter did not do the "original".
by nofear | July 19, 2011, 1:14PM
the thingThere are certain films that don't need to be remade because the original is always going to be better, The Thing is one of them.

prequel/remake? maybe bothIt's going to be the exact same story, even if it is a prequel. The same events take place for the Norwegians before the dog gets to the American base, and then it happens all over again. So my guess is that they leave it open to do a sequel that would be a direct remake of Capenter's classic. And for ****'s sake, all this complaining about this and that - it should be in Norwegian with subtitles, there shouldn't be a female in the lead role, it looks like AVP, I should have written the movie - who cares?! I just hope it keeps with the high tension paranoia between the characters throughout the film, and that they all get their fair screen time. I hate when there's a large ensemble cast and half the characters are just there to be killed, and we're left not caring.

on interest 2if this is in fact a prequel or sequel then I would have to retract my statements and will see it however. But it look extremely similiar to the other movie if it's not a remake I'd swear i heard the same dialogue a couple of times in there.
by kjs69724@gmail.com | July 19, 2011, 7:53AM
no interesti hate to sound so sexiest but i don't need a female lead for this. everywhere i look female leads sucker punch, salt, underworld, buffy, etc and that's fine but can i have a remake of one my favorite movies with a the male cast as it was intended. they lost my money! is the female consumer so important jesus christ! let just remake the dark knight and superman with women as the leads while we are at it.

already covered@ Vaderhoff- I totally agree. We all know that EVERYONE at the original base has to die. The creature then has to escape in the form of a dog to the American base. I would have preferred to have seen the rescue mission in the spring rather than stuff that was covered in the 1980 movie. But whatever- I'll still totally go see this.

Dear Zain ReddingYou are not smart. This is not a remake, it's a prequel. It's a prequel that John Carpenter actually wanted to be in. Can you say 'officially sanctioned'? In addition, any movie fan worth his salt is aware that The Thing was already a remake - so there you have it.

Blasphemy!Dear John Carpenter,
I am sorry the film industry did this to you. It's a travesty to remake a classic like this.

horror trailers--yawnjust more jumpscare schlock. why, OH WHY do studios feel the need t add a goddamn jumpscare at the end of every horror trailer. it's not effective and it makes the movie look as cheap as dollerstore jewerly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouZkkIsLiNg this is how you make a trailer. you leave them going "wtf was that" BEFORE you show the movie title, now after. ugh
by FITROX | July 15, 2011, 2:31PM
wowI love the original and i believe this one will be really good with all this new wave of bad horror movies. About being a prequel, they can't do a sequel without messing the brilliant ending of John Carpenter's The Thing [SPOILER] where we will never know wich one of them was the thing at the end (MacReady or Childs).

introduce real fear to a new audienceI loved the original, its been my favorite scary movie of all time. Alot of scary movies isolate the heros in some remote place but at least they have each other, This movie was different in that not only were they isolated from the rest of the world but they quickly realize that they cant even trust the guy next to them....loved that part and it made the movie that much more intense...I mean imagine you are looking for the thing out in the storge shed but yer also keeping one eye on the guy who is supposed to be looking with you. they are going to bring this very original sense of fear to a whole new audience who has never seen the original and i am glad for it. although it will be hard to beat or even match what the original was

LOOKS AWESOMEI love the JC version like many of us on this board. That said, I dont mind if they do a prequel to that film. Its not like its going to ruin the JC version. This is going to tell us how the Thing got to where it was at the beginning of the film in the JC version. Im excited to see this
by slpstrmer | July 14, 2011, 11:52PM
prequel / remake ?I like many love the original & it still holds itself high with many of todays movies, but i'm not sure what to make of this. Ok so they stated it's a prequel but most of this clip is amost a direct copy of the original movie. So we get to see a bit more of the alien ship but nothing much else is diffrent. Still I am llooking forward to it & I hope the have also kept it with the good specal effect that made the original so ahead of its time and not some cheap CGI crap.

FantasticWhy isnt this out now?
by Artmonkeyproductions | July 14, 2011, 4:44PM
It's a prequelIt's not a remake; it's a prequel. Which, to me, is just as pointless. We already know how it ends: the creature kills almost everyone at the base and escapes in the form of a dog.... where it later meets up with Kurt Russell and company.
Why not invest the time and money into moving the story forward instead of going back and showing us **** we already know?

The thinguhh, this isn't a remake. it has the same title, but know this is a prequel to John Carpenter's film

original = scaryThe original was terrifying!
by lecomlaxer | July 14, 2011, 2:36PM
the thingThis looks sick, so stop complaining. I love the original just as much as any of you. They aren't going to show the best parts of the movie in the trailer (the awesomely gory stuff that made the original so good). Also, who cares if there is a female lead. More than likely, Joel Edgerton and Adewale will be doing most of the cool action anyway. They kept the music the same and you could even catch a few of the alien forms which looked pretty awesome. I say have a little faith...
by Squiggs | July 14, 2011, 2:14PM
NO! This is wrong! They should be speaking Norwegian with Subtitles! thats how John Carpenter Spoiled the plot in the very beginning of his movie. i don't care if its the exact same story or the characters don't live up to their predecessors but for the love of mutilated decapitated human spider heads, if this is a prequel, link the two films together in a way that makes sense! other than that insert "whiteout/AVP" plot and i'd be cool with it
by Jrcjw | July 14, 2011, 2:05PM
girls can not bring down the hammerREALLY? You go and mess up the thing on day one by thinking a female can take the lead. Wow.. why does hollywood try to remake 80s classics with female leads? Heres an Idea how bout we remake thelma and louise. and lets say we cast jeff bridges and shila labaouf. sounds like a cool way to reboot thelma and louise huh? maybe we can call it "THEO and Loui" such crap, what a waste..... AHHHHHHH!!!!!
by GQmatrix24 | July 14, 2011, 1:42PM
This won't doSorry, in no way does it look like this will do justice to the original. You can't take a hard nosed lead character like Kurt Russell's and expect to have the same effect by inserting a 'strong female' lead into essentially the same exact story line. I don't think in any way that is a sexist remark it just goes to show different character types don't work in different stories/plots. This looks more like the original 'Thing' meets "Whiteout' and we all now how great that turned out.

Jonesin for The ThingYES! YES! YES! I want this now! John Carpenter's The Thing is one of my favorite movies of all time, and it's my number one horror film. I have been waiting for this for some time now, and it's definitely shaping up and I cannot wait for this. And I'm glad they went with a different aesthetic for the thing itself, makes me want to see what it looks like even more. And the original song at the end is a perfect touch. I wanna have this movies baby if you can't tell.
