Johann Rettenberger is constantly preoccupied by his unlikely twin obsessions, running marathons and robbing banks. His meticulous training for the former, which have made him something of a minor celebrity locally, keeps him in fine fettle for the latter and the possibility that he might just have to beat it, but fast. Just out of jail for an unspecified crime, and warned by his probation officer to stay on the straight and narrow, he hardly pauses for breath before conducting a series of audacious heists. But even such a single-minded character needs love and affection, and in between robberies he lives quietly in Vienna with his girlfriend, Erika. When the need for a regular fix of excitement becomes too strong to resist, he starts to become careless. Erika uncovers his nefarious shenanigans and helps to get him arrested. Totally driven, however, he escapes and carries on with his brazen offending.
