The Crazies Trailer (2010)

Trailer for The Crazies.

Imagine living in a small town where everything is safe and happy... until suddenly it isn't. Imagine your friends and neighbors going quickly and horrifically insane. In a terrifying tale of the "American Dream" gone horribly wrong, four friends find themselves trapped in their hometown in The Crazies, a reinvention of the George Romero classic directed by Breck Eisner from a screenplay by Ray Wright and Scott Kosar.

David Dutton (Timothy Olyphant) is sheriff of Ogden Marsh, a picture-perfect American town with happy, law-abiding citizens. But one night, one of them comes to a school baseball game with a loaded shotgun, ready to kill. Another man burns down his own house…after locking his wife and young son in a closet inside. Within days, the town has transformed into a sickening asylum; people who days ago lived quiet, unremarkable lives have now become depraved, blood-thirsty killers, hiding in the darkness with guns and knives. Sheriff Dutton tries to make sense of what's happening as the horrific, nonsensical violence escalates. Something is infecting the citizens of Ogden Marsh... with insanity. Now complete anarchy reigns as one by one the townsfolk succumb to an unknown toxin and turn sadistically violent. In an effort to keep the madness contained, the government uses deadly force to close off all access and won't let anyone in or out – even those uninfected. The few still sane find themselves trapped: Sheriff Dutton; his pregnant wife, Judy (Radha Mitchell); Becca (Danielle Panabaker), an assistant at the medical center; and Russell (Joe Anderson), Dutton's deputy and right-hand man. Forced to band together, an ordinary night becomes a horrifying struggle for survival as they do their best to get out of town alive.

Elizabeth Banks was offered the female lead but turned it down because she felt it was too similar to her previous film Slither. Slither is a movie about a small town that gets invaded by aliens and begins to turn the town’s inhabitants into zombie-like creatures. The major different between the two movies is that Slither is much more of a comedy, whereas The Crazies is a traditional horror film.

In the film and in the trailer, there is a scene with a turned woman riding her bike through the abandoned town. The actress is Lynn Lowry and she was in the original 1973 version of The Crazies.

The Crazies Trailer Screencap

The Crazies is one of those movies that will be difficult to live up to its trailer. Timothy Olyphant goes from being a lunatic serial killer in Scream 2, to being a Sheriff in a small town where the population are either becoming lunatics, or crazies. Some find small towns to be charming and comforting, but really they are just disturbing because just as this film shows us, when you live in a small town you tend to trust your neighbors and everyone else you come across every day.

Something terrible is happening to the residents of this quiet hamlet and now there is no one to trust. The concept of not knowing when your friends will turn, or even your own family trying to kill you, is just terrifying. There are a lot of horror movies that deal with how violent and horrible people can be, The Purge showed how unsafe the world would be without laws or restrictions, and those people weren’t even affected by some unknowable disease.

The Crazies appears to have an element of the supernatural, in the zombie variety that makes the townspeople turn on each other and it is all pretty scary. The trailer winds down with the Michael Andrews version of “Mad World”, which is such a hauntingly perfect song that it made the trailer for The Crazies even better. The Crazies has all the great qualities of a horror film and even though it is a remake of the 1970s film of the same name, it looks exciting all on its own.
