You guys just have to stop complaining about Robert Downey Jr. He is awesome the movie is awesome and i've read the novels.
If you think the movie isnt good than you should take a camera better go to university first and gather a group of 'actors' and shoot the movie.
If there were no humour or S.Holmes's cool headed attidute the movie would suck that is true and because in reality -in novels- S.Holmes is so solemn or serious R.Downeys acting made it more enjoyable
P:S: SHUT THE **** UP ALL YOU!!

avoid at all cost
I am a fan of "Lock stock" and "Sherlock Holmes" books, but that one must be the worst movie I've seen in the long time!!! The rythm is way off and jerky, the sets are cluttered with junk props, music is too loud and dramatic - it was like watching some action movie trailer for 2 hours, where bits and pieces are flashing on the screen non-stop. It was physically painfull to sit through, I would not go see it againg even if I got paid to do so. The acting was all right, so I think it's a director's fault. Being true to the books is not even an issue, its just a bad bad bad movie.
by unchainedaura | January 7, 2010, 2:08AM
seen it it genuinely sucks ass
ok saw this film, almost walked outta the cinema v3 BLOODY TIMES, what the hell have they done to it? yes in the further adventures holmes fellmin love with a jewel thief. but this is a goddamned prequel. Also for aall you jackasses tellng us to read the books, read een the copies as published in the strand magazine (look it up) as was fortunate to acquire a copy from a collector man years ago so have even read it in it's pre book form. This is a complete bastardisation as any fan will realise, have not for many years seen such a huge heap of cinematic excrement.
by vishworks | December 31, 2009, 5:44PM
Worst ever
This movie will go down in history as ONE OF THE WORST EVER adaptations of Sherlock Holmes. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude law are instantly forgettable. Miss you Jeremy Brett, Edward Hardwicke and David Burke. Grenada was a classic. This movie just S-U-C-K-S !!
by Bob Blahblah | December 21, 2009, 5:39PM
Sherlock Holmes
It is sad when a film maker has to fictionalize fiction in order to sell a movie. If you can't make an entertaining film with the authors original story don't pick up the camera. If you can't create a completely original idea of your own don't pick up the camera. I should not have to remind anyone of The Time Machine, War of the Worlds. And now Sherlock Holmes. I'm afraid to imagine what they are going to do with Jude Law starring as Charles Darwin in 2010.
by R. B. Bernstein | December 11, 2009, 12:49PM
Sherlock Holmes
I actually *have* seen the film, and I've read and studied the original stories since I was a kid, so I can confirm (i) that this film is surprisingly faithful to the stories in all sorts of ways, large and small; (ii) that its portrayal of Holmes is not out of line with what we know from the books and stories; (iii) that it takes place after Holmes and Watson have known each other for seven years; (iv) that , as others have noted, Holmes was an expert boxer, a proficient martial-arts fighter and fencer; and (v) that there is mystery aplenty in this film, all of which Holmes expertly unravels while explaining his reasoning to us.

I found myself anticipating the mistakes that pompous know-it-all types would make (Holmes wasn't a boxer, Holmes wasn't a martial-arts guy), thereby proving that they just didn't know what they were talking about, but I didn't expect to get the proof this soon.

Solid
Hey,I agree with Kdog,aqua,Muwassalat.com if anyone readed the books,"starting with Sign of four" Holmes was action.Jeremy Brett couldn't act the way character,A.C.Doyle had wriiten in the BOOKS,SO READ THE NOVELS 1ST!!!!!
by JacksonB | November 9, 2009, 12:37PM
Cocaine addict
Ahhhhhh..I get it now! So that's why they cast this coke addict Downey as Holmes!!! I had forgotten that Holmes himself was an addict. I can't stand this guy so I will not be seeing the movie. But I do get it now. Too bad the roles weren't reversed. I would much rather have seen and believed Jude Law as Holmes. Robert Jr. is not Sherlock Holmes.
by MOVIEPIG | November 8, 2009, 10:49AM
YES YES YES
I can't wait to see Mr. Sexy (Robert Downey Jr.) do some detective work. Lets just say we got a lot of HATERS out there. If its not enjoyable at least I get to see a little body action. Hey...I'm a woman what can I say..
by clonomat | November 4, 2009, 11:26PM
Holmes in name only
Nowhere in the trailer do I see any trace of anyone being brilliant at all – other than the characters and the narration repeatedly telling me that’s the case. I know it’s tough to get “brainy” across in a trailer, but how about some reaction shots of people being astonished by Holmes’ wit, detection skills or deductive reasoning? Instead, I’m seeing shot after shot of a shirtless Holmes kicking ass in a boxing ring. Even Downey Jr.s “hero shot”, where they summarize his character is from the boxing scene…I just don’t know what I’m supposed to think.
by Mrs. L. King | September 18, 2009, 1:54PM
Bring Back Jeremy Brett!!!
It is as if the Hollywood has never READ a Sherlock Holmes story. In it, Holmes is described in bodily appearance and grooming habits, no matter what seems to happen, fasticiously clean a s cat." At least, Brett, had the decency to have the various character traits of Holmes, Watson, and Mrs. Hutson, and other essential characters, written up for the writers and actors to follow, giving authenticity to their version of Sherlock Holmes. When will Hollywood learn: The Brits do a much better job at period-piece recreations.
by Cin | August 21, 2009, 6:34PM
Holmes was indeed a capable fighter
Just a note to those who claim that Holmes is nothing like this... I believe you may have forgotten many of the details about the character from the stories.

Holmes is a skilled swordsman (though he never has to use it, it's mentioned once or twice), a master boxer (he almost became a professional boxer in his youth), a proficient martial artist.

Not to mention, a cocaine and morphine addict (He even carried his own syringe for the cocaine in a little leather case). Though in that time period, both were legal, as well as opium, it still doesn't change the fact that this was a part of his character.

Not only that, but in several stories, Holmes gets into physical altercations with the antagonists (Moriarty being the most famous, as they fist fought and wrestled on a cliff overlooking a waterfall in one story).

So please do tell how this adaptation, though obviously more action oriented, can be entirely out of character. The only difference I see is that Holmes is more disheveled, and he's more roguish with women, though the latter may just be an implication of the trailer, and not actually occur in the movie.

And lest you forget, this is clearly meant to be a young Sherlock Holmes, before he took on many of his familiar mannerisms.

TL;DR - Anyone whining about character differences or the action orientation has a fuzzy memory about the stories. It's skewed more toward action but it's far from out of place with the original stories.

Appreciating the quality
No site gives that much options and quality @ the same time. Great site.

Apart from that Really looking forward to this Action movie.

Everyone loves Sherlock HOLMES novels and now to see him in movie, tough to see what critics thinks.

Where's the MYSTERY?
Holmes books was about solving mysteries. The stories appealed to MYSTERY fans. What has happened to the MYSTERY genre? Alfred Hitchcock was the master of mystery in Hollywood. They are marketing this movie not as a MYSTERY, but as an action/adventure. That's becasue Hollywood thinks that's the only thing that sells films these days. Hollywood is WRONG.
by Ouijaman | July 22, 2009, 9:24AM
why not get Arnie?
Oh great, they made Holmes into an action/adventure hero. Hollywood sucks. :-(
by bezz100 | July 17, 2009, 6:18PM
Movie is taking stuff from the books.
In the books it does say that holmes did box a little and he was known to be a little sloppy if he got absorbed in something like one of his
chemistry projects or part of a disgue.
by Sea4Shoes | July 10, 2009, 11:38PM
Hmmmm...
Well, it doesn't look too true to the books, that's for sure! And Jude Law is not at all how I pictured Watson to look like. Actually, I didn't picture Holmes as buff and muscely, either (and wtf with the fight club-type scenes?). That being said, I'll probably enjoy this movie if I let go of the preconcieved notions that the book has put in my head. I do still plan on seeing it, I just won't expect it to be anything like the books.
by Mulerider | June 26, 2009, 11:01AM
looks good to me
I never read any of the books, yet this looks freaking great. If your boxer are all in a bunch because its not the "real" Holmes... then go make your own Sherlock Holmes movie. Big deal. I want to see this cause it looks like its fun and full of action.
by Rogue_Elephant1 | June 25, 2009, 5:20PM

by andy.minor | June 12, 2009, 2:57PM
Um... a word, please?
I was never arguing for Jeremy Brett, or whoever.
I was never arguing against Sherlock Holmes being an impressive fighter, et cetera et cetera...

That's surfface ****.
Honestly, that's stuff that doesn't matter.

The only thing that caught me off guard was that they made Holmes look scruffy and unprofessional - and stout. Holmes was quite the opposite.

YES he could take care of himself in a fight, he just WASN'T short and stubbly.

Though I can probably forgive all this after realizing it as a prequel.

And whoever said Holmes wasn't relevant in this day and age hasn't done their homework.

Witches and vampires are SO 13th century (HA) but look what we've done with them!

Relevancy my ass.
by Zel | June 12, 2009, 8:35AM
AMAZING!
I'm sick tired of your whinings about "OMG This is not Holmes because it's not Jeremy Brett's"
Time changes, Jeremy was unable to do action scenes but the books are FULL of action, so please stop complaining just to be cool because OMG you readed the ****ing books and watched the ****ing Granada's series!
I did that too and I'm not complaining at all, instead I'm truly excited for this new movie!
I'm hoping that this MODERN take on the character will bring new readers for the Sir A.C.Doyle's books.
Book-snobs-nazi are just awfully annoying!
by paul@paulcourville.com | June 2, 2009, 3:44PM
Fantastic
This is a MOVIE based on a FICTIONAL character, Sherlock Holmes... You people who are getting your panties all in a bunch over it "not being the REAL Sherlock Holmes" need to get a grip. IT'S ALL FICTION, remember what fictions Is??? It's made up **** that never happened and the characters are not real people and the events NEVER occured... ALL of that being said, this appears to be a really fast paced action movie based on the Holmes character with slow motion portions to give the mentally slow a chance to see some of the action that they would have otherwise missed completely..

Kill Your Idols
Looks absolutely ridiculous (read: "Van Helsing"), but it has Downey Jr. so I'm there.
by Strider | May 21, 2009, 4:25PM
Elementary my dears
Those who are stuck in the past are doomed to be bored to death. Basil Rathbone, Jeremy Brett, Christopher Plummer, Johnny Depp, Rupert Everett....and now Robert Downey Jr. SO WHAT!!!!! Let the director do what he is supposed to do....direct us to his vision, hopefully new and arresting, and drag us out of the belief that new is not good. I'm so tired of people moaning and complaining that "fings ain't what they used ter be....." Well, face it, they AIN'T.
I'm WAY past the age of consent, and I appreciate new images shaking the cobwebs off of old memories. Sure Shakespeare was great watching with the groundlings, but wasn't TITUS a beautiful collage of old, new and surreal? I'm bored. Astonish me......thank you M. Cocteau.
by invictus | May 21, 2009, 2:52PM
NIHILITY
The great powers that be have determined in their great understanding of nihility, that this actor is qualified to play Sherlock Holmes.
Logic suggests possesing a history of drug abuse does not in any way qualify one to play the world's greatest detective. As a spectator is it vital as Holmes said , "It is a capital mistake to theorize before you have all the evidence. It biases the judgment."
by Paul from Whittier | May 21, 2009, 2:51PM
Sherlock Holmes
The test of whether this is truly a Sherlock Holmes portrayal is whether the main character uses evidence combined with logical reasoning to solve a case. If it be merely investigative adventure, then it is not Sherlock Holmes. The mind is the key.

Holmes->House->Holmes?
So, the character of Gregory House, of the television show of the same name, was loosely based on Sherlock Holmes, except tey made him a lot more of a slob, and a tiny bit more of a douchebag (I've read all of the books, and yes, Holmes is a bit of an *******). It looks to me like Guy Ritchie has now taken a bit of House and pulled it into Holmes... While I do love the original stories, this could certainly be interesting.

PS - To anyone saying "This is not Holmes", I'd say it's more "Not a Holmes story," but Holmes could always take care of himself and had an impressive physical prowess.
by Kenzo | May 21, 2009, 2:05AM
Sherlock Holmes
Well, this is released at Christmas, so it can join all the other turkeys.

Why not re-name it "Lethal Weapon 5" instead of Ritchie's trying to make "Adam Sandler does Holmes and Watson"?
In fact, why not have Sandler and Jason Biggs as the intrepid pair, and throw in Ben Stiller as Moriarty? Then we really could have one big Ritchie-Hollywood-Grossout trash-heap!

In case you want to see a REAL depiction of Holmes and Watson, go find "Hound of the Baskervilles", "The Spider Woman" or "The Scarlet Claw" starring Rathbone and Bruce.
Guy...are you reading? THAT's how to do it.
Kenzo

take a pill, people
i think people who are complaining that this is an action film haven't read the holmes stories in too long. almost every case has action in it. holmes is an expert boxer so the boxing makes total sense, and he's always getting into tussles with dudes who are bigger and stronger than him. robert downey is a brilliant choice for a modern holmes. lighten up!
by kdog | May 20, 2009, 12:03PM
by the way
this film is to be like a pre-quel.....an origin story of who the two met and how holmes started off....so.....it is not even based on the books. Also books and movies are two different mediums, therefore they have different ways of telling a story.....
if you want a movie to be like to book just read the damn book.
by kdog | May 20, 2009, 11:52AM
for all you rabit idiots
Sherlock Holmes is a great read, but the material is outdated for today's young audience, so get over your spastic, "don't change a thing" bull****, if you don't want to see it, then don't see it, now stop your *****y whiny ass crap, because usually the ones who say they will hate it ---- see it anyway...so either way the studio gets your money.
by Watson | May 20, 2009, 2:42AM
Depressed
I am so depressed! Why call it SherlockHolmes! Read the books......watch the authentic Jeremy Brett who has Holmes to perfection!

Is nothing "sacred" anymore.... This Holmes fan will not be going anywhere near this rubbish!
by Dr.Wathef***son? | May 19, 2009, 11:45PM
jaysus
It's like one of the parody traliers from tropic thunder - ridicluous. Classic case of a brilliant character and verdant narrative being ripped to shreds by an extremely average film maker. Utter rubbish simultaneuosly tainting a legend. Richie should have retired after lock stock.
by EWAdams | May 19, 2009, 3:44PM
Homes WAS an action hero.

He was extraordinarily strong, had an iron constitution, and was a skilled boxer, fencer, and singlestick expert. He also knew an obscure Japanese form of wrestling called baritsu.

However, he would never have left the house unshaven or looking like a slob. He affected "a certain quiet primness of dress."
by aqua | May 19, 2009, 12:46PM
Idiotic comments
You people need to get a grip. Why does every movie you people see have to always resemble the book? Authors: What about legal rights to their f**king characters you stupid idiots!!!
by TLC35 | May 19, 2009, 12:42PM
Awful
I am not sure what this movie is trying to be but it is not Sherlock Holmes. I am an avid fan of the Holmes stories and the tv series with Jeremy Brett. But this new movie is a joke.

by lostmemento | May 19, 2009, 12:15PM
get over it
I think people need to get over the fact that it's more action packed then the Sherlock they're used to. Obviously not hearing that Guy said he was going to make this a what? MORE ACTION HERO LIKE SHERLOCK. But, I do agree, too much slow mo even for a trailer.
by terrible | May 19, 2009, 11:00AM
just terrible
Jeremy Brett remains the undisputed champion of actors playing an AUTHENTIC Sherlock Holmes. This is not Sherock Holmes. It is an action movie with actors labeled with the names "Sherlock Holmes" and "Dr. Watson."

Go watch the Jeremy Brett series for the real Sherlock Homes. This new movie may be a good movie, but it is a very pitiful excuse for Sherlock Holmes.
by andy.minor | May 19, 2009, 10:26AM
...
It's going to be an entertaining movie...

BUT WHERE IS SHERLOCK HOLMES?!?!

I love Robert Downey Jr... but my goodness, he's just not Holmes. Holmes is skinny and wiry, rarely having any facial hair (unless in disguise).

Ugh.
by Aaron | May 19, 2009, 10:06AM
huh?
what in the hell did they do to sherlock holmes???
by Bunny | May 19, 2009, 10:01AM
Ugh.
I love the Sherlock Holmes novels, and the 80s television series with Jeremy Brett, and this trailer just depresses me. It really seems like they are sacrificing everything that Holmes is to make an action movie. And I am assuming the woman is Irene Adler, but appears to be both Holmes' love interest and about 15 years younger than him? It's all just so very wrong. Ugh.
by Egk | May 19, 2009, 8:27AM
Great
If i couldn't wait to see it before seeing the trailer now i got a really big problem, I love it. I love Guy ritchie, and this movie it's totally on his style with all those slow-motion, the boxing footage of Snatch.... Absolutly great. I can't wait to see it.
by Hairyman | May 19, 2009, 6:20AM
SSSSLLLLLOOOOOWWWW MOOOOO?
Why so much slow-motion action? I like how Ritchie seems to re-use a lot of his actors. I thought this was a decent trailer. I am going to see this movie anyway, but at least it didn't make me want to not see it.
by SoulHonky | May 18, 2009, 8:34PM
Solid B+
Solid trailer. Didn't really get me any more fired up for the film but I'm already probably there opening weekend so that's not really a diss. It looks like Guy Ritchie is sticking to his roots which is a good thing. Still, who didn't think of Snatch when they saw the boxing footage? Nice to see Mark Strong getting more work.
by MattStas | May 18, 2009, 3:52PM
