“In order to have a piece of land, you must suffer,” laments an old man in this poetic cinema verité film of a cattle-ranching community in northeastern Mexico on the verge of extinction. Working and living on the arid desert plains, the families of cowboys and farmers find pleasure in the simple things of life — family dinners, weddings and baptisms, the occasional village fiesta — but throughout it all, they look to the skies for signs of much needed rain. Stunningly photographed and delicately paced, Drought is a beautiful, poignant portrait of a way of life on the verge of extinction.
