On a small cattle ranch in the heart of the west, James Hickock witnesses the horrific murder of his only son, an army deserter. After months of unbroken monotony, James is forced to shelter a brutish Union officer and his prisoner, Edward, a young man also condemned to hang for desertion. James must decide whether to allow the law to take its course, or to prevent Edward from suffering the same unjust death that found his son.
