Franco Zeffirelli fictionalizes the golden days of Maria Callas, opera’s most notorious diva, in this luminous tribute to one of the greatest singers of the 20th century. Fanny Ardant portrays the brilliant and impetuous Callas, coaxed out of her self-imposed exile by her long-time friend and former manager, Larry Kelly (Jeremy Irons) to star in a film version of Carmen. The film project re-ignites her passion for performance and rekindles her friendship with Larry, long ago estranged by her difficult nature.
