Upscale Font The trailer for Avatar.

Avatar takes us to a spectacular new world beyond our imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption and discovery, as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilization. The film was first conceived by Cameron 14 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not yet exist. Now, after four years of actual production work, Avatar delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film, disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep More Trailer Details

What rubbish written by those who haven't seen it. I have, and it's a great visual experience. Forget the so-called hackneyed plot (how many plots actually are there in this world?), and feast on the stunning visuals, and the real excitement and tension. This film is a terrific experience, and worth a visit for that alone - like the best kind of immersive fairground ride, and you don't have to get off again after just two minutes!
You going to condemn a great cinematic experience on the basis of a trailer seen bumpily on a PC monitor? You have no idea.
See it and marvel at what Cameron has dreamed up and put on screen!!!
It's really fabulous, and the heroine simply gorgeous, even if she is ten foot tall and blue!

WTF?
My god the ignorant comments I see here had me laughing so hard I teared up. Avatar is leaps and bounds ahaed of Spirits Within and Beowulf. they had to create new technology just for the film. No film has had this quality of CG every. For those of you trying to claim video games have better CG, YOU WISH. Sorry but this film will be the bench mark by which future CG fims will be compared. The bias being showed here for Japanese CG is hilarious. Avatar looks like it will be a great film. I only wish they didn't give away so much of the story in the trailers.
by **** | December 2, 2009, 12:26PM
FACT: Japan is and was allways better at this type
Mr Tups, please go watch FF Spirits Within or Advent Children before praising that pretentious shit called Avatar. In matter of high-quality and realistic 3D graphics, both movies mentioned by me are AT LEAST equal to Avatar, if not better. And they were released YEARS ago.

Saying that Avatar and Beowulf's graphics are better than Spirits Within is laughable, and just shows your ignorance to the achievements of Japan's CGI technology.
For God's sake, there are VIDEO GAMES that look similar to this pretentious movie you call 'revolutionary'.

*sigh*

When will americans get down of their high horses and acknowledge that are other countries that can to do things BETTER than them? They are good at movies, and Japan is good at CGI games. That won't change just because Mr Cameron says so.
by Tups | December 2, 2009, 12:22AM
Oh come now
Mr Revolutionary Arrogance, How can you compare Final Fantasy to this? IF you wanted to use a comparison then maybe use Beowulf as even that is far superior than Final Fantasy, but then still I would say there is no comparison.
You're slating the movie, because it's been done before? i.e. CGI, and Cameron is promoting his own movie by using a massive marketting campaign for it? The movie cost 300+Million Dollars to make and you DON'T think every man and his dog who worked on the film is going to say it's best movie of all time? Nonetheless;
Who cares! It still looks like 150 minutes of eye candy! I for one am definitely watching it. Looks great. Gimmi a popcorn and a coke and I'll be happy on the 18th December. ;)
by Epic writer | November 29, 2009, 3:33PM
Fuce
Seriously? This looks like a completely generic story wrapped around a CGI/sci-fi movie.
I see graphics that a video game could do...does anyone else feel like they are watching the Gundans in Star Wars? Also, the story is SO generic. Nothing like the fun stuff Cameron has done before. Let me guess, the main character falls for one of the aliens and then has a conflict of interest where he's not sure if he can support humainty or must help the aliens because they are the actual good guys and humans are the bad guys. So he sides with the aliens against the humans in the final battle. Please. How many times has this story been done? SERIOUSLY?
by **** | November 29, 2009, 1:24AM
Revolutionary Arrogance
The hype behind this movie just shows how arrogant mister Cameron(and Hollywood) really is. There is nothing "revolutionary" about this movie. Video game companies of Japan are using those type of graphics a long time ago. Hell, just go watch "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" released YEARS AGO, or FFVII Advent Children, if you don't believe me.

Contrary to what Mr.-arrogant-Cameron want us to believe, he isn't the first one to do a movie like that.

Avatar Hacks Gamer Minds
Hmm, that’s odd. The Na’vi seem to be a CGI carbon copy of the Draenei race from World of Warcraft, the most popular online role playing game in history. Their inclusion seems an especially clever way of drawing in the 15,000,000 strong WoW contingent without acquiring any copyrights, trademarks, or even making any mention to the source material.

Its probably going to be a good movie, but I am disappointed with the alien design... to me they look like humans in costumes- why go to the trouble of developing a technology that allows multiple characters with as much detail as dobbie or golum, and then make them look like extras on star trek...

I think it's great that Cameron decided to not let a trailer out until only a few months before the release. Just like in the old days. He knows (as do most of us) that if a movie has a trailer out a year before the movie is released, then it is probably crap. Plus, not only did the trailer come out so late in the production process, it is a great trailer that reveals virtually nothing about the story line. Brilliant.

Jar Jar Binks it ain't
I am looking forward to this film. I didn't know it was in 3D but then I do live on a different planet. BTW I quite liked JarJar Binks.
by agent83 | August 30, 2009, 9:23AM
What I liked...
I like that this trailer doesn't use those stupid deep voice overs, "In the future..."
This trailer is more than a teaser - it actually shows you the essential elements of the story and the key characters. A real "teaser", like the 2012 teaser trailer doesn't tell you anything about the story, doesn't even show you the key characters.
And to those that are judging the "movie" from the "trailer" are idiots. This movie uses an entirely new technology to CREATE the 3-D that you see. It's designed to appear realistic, something YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE.
So until you actually see THIS MOVIE in the theatre in 3-D, (not Ice Age or some crap), you're opinion on the matter is comepletely uneducated and 100% irrelevant.

In-other-words, STFU.
by Noxman | August 30, 2009, 9:19AM
and so on
After reading more and more of the comments posted here, im just going to say it.

Some of you people have absolutely no imagination. You must have to be the most stuck up, tight arsed self-loathing prick to be so arrogant as to liken the enjoyment of this to that of a child watching a cartoon.

Just enjoy it. I don't see whats wrong in suspending your disbelief and being whisked away to wonderful places (obviously not in a hallucinagenic sense). Just chillax, have a beer and enjoy yourself. No one, though they won't admit this, can say that they enjoy complaining about it being cartoony more than attempting to engage with the film and just have fun.

Of course almost all the comments become null when we realise this is a trailer. Traiiilleeerrrrrrrrr. Although if you've seen it in the special i-max showings, fair enough.

by Noxman | August 30, 2009, 9:07AM
Peoples reactions
I am astounded at some of the reactions people have posted here.

First of all, to say it's all motion capture so there is no live acting is an oxymoron. They need the actors to act if they wish to motion capture it; which they did extensively, using a rather ingenious system that allows the actors to do the scene infront of a green screen while the director watches a fully rendered version on his little directors tv thing.

Also it was filmed in New Zealand as James Cameroon wanted the actors to be as close as possible to the type of epic landscape they need to convey themselves as being in.

While it may be a little predictable in the story, it looks pretty enjoyable with plenty of action (giant robot awesomeness). For people to say that its just cartoony and "Jar Jar Binks bad" is a massive assumption. Also you can tell just by watching it that its not a kid movie (guns, guy getting dragged out of a ship by a monster, blue aliens wearing next to nothing, an emotional story line that isn't as cut and dry as it may seem etc).

I like weird movies, but ...
I think I'll still go and see it. Looks very fun and exhilarating!

So what about it not looking real? Did Star Wars look real?

Plus + there should be a good story, even a love story of blue aliens. Taking everything into account how good a story could it be of a poor guy and a rich girl on a sinking ship...?

You are basically an idiot... Do your research. About 5-10% of what's in the teaser is NOT real. There are no real locations, barely any live-action acting at all. It's all motion-capture, you can tell by the way they move. The scene in the lab where Jake wakes up in his Avatar, those two doctors in the room with him are CGI. When he gets off the Samson transport carrier, fake. When the marines were marching into the hanger, fake. Now that is impressive to the artists, because they were able to trick you already without the 3-D and IMAX.

Some people cry about the CGI not being being realistic enough and cartoony, i dont blame u guys but i dont think u know what ur talking about. I study 3D animation and CGI myself and let me tell u good CGI is a different thing than realism. Yea with today's 3D technology, realism can already be easily achieved, go on 3D animation fan websites and forums and u can find renders of cars so real u will literally say its a photograph if not seen on a 3D fan forum. I think the CGI in this movie wanted to be more of "good looking" than realistic, they gave it minor bloom effect and a very deep and colorful render.

Avater great trailer
This movie looks stunning. The trailer blew my mind away the first time I saw it, and that was before I realised you could watch it in HD-Plus, which was even better. Those people who say it looks 'cartoony' must have a poor resolution monitor or something like that because to me it looks like the best CGI of any movie I've seen, and that's without the IMAX 3D.

I don't understand some people getting really passionate about bad-mouthing this movie. If you don't like it, don't watch it. Don't spoil it for the rest of us by saying things like "This looks FUCKING STUPID!" I'm sure there are plenty of people who think your favourite movie is stupid too.

As for the people who complain about there not being enough live-action; why does it matter? It's a sci-fi, of course there's lot's of CGI.

I myself can't wait for this movie. I'm snapping up IMAX tickets as soon as they come on sale. I loved Aliens and T2 so I'm sure this will deliver a memorable storyline too.

polarized glasses are nothing new
@Technosavy
The polarized glasses used for 3D today are nothing new. When 3D was first introduced many, many decades ago, this is what they first used. But back then it was extremely difficult to keep two projectors in sync so that process was scrapped to later have the crappy process that used red an blue lenses.
And now we are back to using Polarized glasses which makes much more sense than red and blue lenses.

Will have to wait and see. I dont have a problem with CGI actors, but CG landscapes, no matter how well done or creative, still look fake. This is what ruined the star wars prequels for me. AVATAR
With regard to Titanic, everyone already knew that the ship sank, yet the flick became the highest grossing of all time. It doesn't matter if Avatar were animated using crayons and lined paper. Cameron's gift is the ability is to show you spectacle and have you care about the characters at the center of it. Who gives a crap if it looks "cartoony". And to the poster known as "MEH", CG movies that have "blown people away" include pretty much everything Pixar has ever done.

Battle for terra...kinda similar?
I know that the premise isn't exactly the same.... but there is a new kids film in CGI coming out that has a very similar premise to Avatar called "Battle for Terra". It seems that in the space of time it's taken to get this film finished dozens of other studios have already pumped out films with sililar storylines and designs. And how good is a film gonna be if it only looks good in 3D on an Imax. The over-hype may dissapoint. I'm sure it'll be a great movie, but they are talking like this film is gonna make everyday life look fake in comparrison.

Good Video Game?
Those of you saying that this llooks like a good video game obviously haven't been playing the best video games. There are many videogame cinematics with animation better than this movie seems to have. To be certain, I am quite excited to this movie, despite not being the hugest Cameron fan, but the CG is sub-par to say the least. Hopefully they are still touching it up, which happens a lot, but seriously there's no texture at all to the alien bodies and faces and that's going to drive me insane.

The whats this movie called..Avatar?
The sad part is that this movie will make a fortune as well as become a game and a spin off TV series, a new mens cologne, toys, shirts, etc.
And to think that a GOD of Hollywood and his lesser Gods and Goddetts all think their target markets are Nerd types that who only care about the technology behind producing such a movie and the fact that one of their fav cartoon characters has come to life! Im wondering if the nebish nerds will catch on first and see that this pre packaged cartoon garbage is actually how these Gods think of you and yours. Does anyone remember all the taunts, slurrs and jeers that were thrown at adults that read comic books? Go to TV Land and watch a show that includes Goober on the Andy Griffith show and he will have a comic book tucked into his back pocket and some stupid hat sans a propeller on his head. Everyone that grew up around this time, including the Gods and Goddetts that have control over the movies today and dictate what you will watch, grew up thinking that those that read these books was a child or a moron. WHAT does that tell you when the largest budgeted movie are all cartoons? Cartoons at the movies were meant for pre-movie entertainment, Comic Book Serials were meant for B directors with no budgets and everyone involved a chance to demonstrate that they could do as good as the top tallent. But costing the studios millions less to actually have the stars, directors etc, that they could do well on a well written piece.
Not every movie has to be some deep dark drama. But hey, what about a movie that not only entertains but also shows a little more depth than a comic book hero?
Last comment. Please if the writers strike is still going on someone settle it soon or we are going to spend Christmas and New Years watching the B list of Comic Book Heros and Villians.

The 'tech' required to make a CGI movie like this may have already been achieved awhile ago, but dolby digital 3D, the latest in 3-D animated movies achieved this technology a while back only, you'll be glad to NOT watch this in those polarized red-blue glasses but futuristic ones that took that many years to reach. Hey this movie is going to be explosive. The voice overs are fantastic, the CGI is not something you should be looking out for, but how well James Cameron can meld it with the animation and voicings. Get ready to hold your breath.

Seriously, this is the trailer for the movie that is supposed to reign supreme from the brilliant James Cameron? I don't give a hell who directed it or how much work was put into it. the CG is just not there yet.... and unfortunately 400 million dollars will not be made on opening weekend for this piece... not that many people want to watch a video game sequence for 2 hours. Man, I'm so damned disappointed. Nobody can deny that the realism JUST ISN"T THERE. Period. I'm sorry, and I love James Cameron, but there is no sidestepping the fact that its an animated film. No animated film has ever blown any mass audience away. It could be an awesome movie, and do well, but its no game changer, and its not going to satisfy everybody's expectations. I heard so much about this movie. It'll be fun to watch, but you won't see me standing in line for this on a Friday evening.

Guys until you have seen the IMAX 3D Trailer you should not comment on the trailer at all.... trust me you wont believe your eyes BUT it did leave me with a headache and feeling ill.... saying that it was brilliant and 3D is the way to go... Cinema back to being a piece of escapism.... just with 7 foot thundercats... :)
by dbin78 | August 21, 2009, 4:50PM
Epic
This movie looks to go down as one of the greats. The trailer hooked me and can't wait to see more.
by flabbybuns | August 21, 2009, 3:03PM
Better and Better
Remember that this is only a trailer, and will look incredibly detailed on a big screen or imax. For me, the trailer looks better and better each time I watch it.
by Wtfisdis | August 21, 2009, 2:58PM

Hmmm
I am not a fan of sci-fi movies per se so I went into this after having heard so much hype over Avatar...

HUGELY disappointing. Very cartoonish - looks like a Star Wars prequel. Is this supposed to be a childrens movie?
by Cameron's Cool | August 21, 2009, 11:42AM
VideoGame
So, the trailer DOES look like a high tech video game -- albeit a really good one. I'm going to reserve judgment until I see the film -- hopefully in 3D. I don't think it's fair to judge a film before seeing it. Now if you're judging the trailer on your computer screen, that may be a different thing.
by pancor | August 21, 2009, 11:32AM
Could be promising
I was today on special 20-minutes long preview, and in 3d, not on a flat screen it really shows some claws, one scene especially made an impression on me. It is still nothing special, but i would like to see it in the theater now more than before i watched this preview. And CG looks really convincing in cinema, so be ashamed to whine
by Angel_kris | August 21, 2009, 11:29AM
does not look good
i am extremely disappointed in the quality of cg. Please have a look at at Final Fantasy advent chuildren or the quality of the CG in the fight between Genesis and Sephiroth in crisis core both are more than a couple of years ago. For 2009 this is not even game quality CG forget Movie quality CG.

Give 'em a break
People, get a grip, seriously. Better yet, give hard working people a chance for once in your lives. What the hell are you guys doing?! I don't see any of your names under director, or producer. Besides, it's the same director from Titanic, at least give him a chance. I know every last one of you have seen Titanic and loved the hell out of that movie, so stop your b**ching, and watch it when it comes out. You probably will eat your words when you do!!!!!
by motokokusanagi86 | August 21, 2009, 9:54AM
Well, now that's done with......?
Well hopefully soon Cameron will get Avatar out of his system so he can get around to finally starting "Battle Angel Alita". I've been waiting for him to do something about it for years. Man, he's been sitting on the rights to that for ages. It is one of my favourite Mangas. The thing is, my hopes and expectations will be so high that I doubt even Jim and his new technology will be able to live up to them. Still, I'm confident that he's not gonna turn out a "Dragonball Evolution".
by SirScorn | August 21, 2009, 9:31AM
Simpsons
The Simpsons look better then this.
by motokokusanagi86 | August 21, 2009, 9:27AM
i'm on the fence
If it wasn't for all the hype telling us that it's gonna blow everything we've ever seen so far out of the water, i'd say it looks really good. But it does remind me more of a video game or leaves me a little cold like will the Star Wars prequels. Don't get me wrong, i'm not being negative - just telling it how I see it (Don't get upset Cameron lovers!). There is no way cameron would let unfinished shots be used in a trailer for this film. So maybe this film really will impress when watched with the new technology. It's just getting more difficult to impress with anything nowadays.
by J Curwen | August 21, 2009, 9:26AM
Fingers crossed!
Its been a long time coming! Jim Cameron knows what he is about, so this could be the event movie of the year. Lets hope he has it right!
by still excited | August 21, 2009, 9:23AM
worth comparing
Looking at this vs. Beowulf's (released 11/16/07) trailer (early summer 2007), I have to say that this looks extremely cartoony. There's hardly any texture to the animation. And this is an HD+ trailer, where Beowulf's was not HD, and over 2 years old. To those people shouting down the animations, I would suggest you take a look. Yeah, Cameron has done good work, but vs an older release in a very similar genre, the animation does feel very cartoony.
by victorinox | August 21, 2009, 8:04AM
old cgi
the CGI and the Effects looks eactly like Episode III...or even worse......
by SevanSins | August 21, 2009, 7:55AM

by McDrewn | August 21, 2009, 7:00AM
Quality of the CGI
Really! You are all going to debait of the quality of the CGI based on a fast cut edit of a trailer on your COMPUTER SCREENS!! At lease pass judgement of how it looks in the theater, not here.

Avatar - trailer
It was a mistake to release this trailer. Cameron should have waited for the release and let word of mouth do the job.
by Yin | August 21, 2009, 6:00AM
Extraordinary
I must say, the vision that James Cameron had all those years ago is truly magnificent. How realistic were some of you planning for the Na'vi to look? I think they are very creative and the planet, Pandora that we're given a glimpse into is simply, amazing. It's beautiful and you can tell a lot of love has gone into this movie.
by Piku | August 21, 2009, 4:22AM

by Kuzz Buzz | August 21, 2009, 4:02AM
Come on Guys
For the people who are being negative, which is your right, I just wonder if they have teh right perpective when viewing this trialler - This is after all....
* a teaser trailer
* this is obvioulsy out there just to add to the hype
* the final product is not out till mid December
* no dialouge in this trailler to give any depth
* the final product is meant to be seen in 3D
For myself I look forward to a trailler with more thought. A clip that will show some of the plot, more charaters, and dialouge. Or maybe I should just wait for the movie. Ha ha
by Thesar | August 21, 2009, 3:26AM
Elfquest's Final Fantasy?
I'm always in the mood for a good laugh, and this certainly is going to bust me up. Other than New Moon - which will crack me up as well, this will probably be the best time I'll have in the theatre this winter, only due to all the laughing I'll be doing. This looks absolutely hilarious!
by Louis | August 21, 2009, 1:01AM
Cameron's back!
I've been waiting years for this film and now I'll have to wait only a few more months. The trailer is astounding! For those who are disappointed just remember this... James Cameron has never made a bad film and he always reaches the highest levels when he makes sci-fi. Remember Aliens? Terminator?
by fuckinhaters | August 20, 2009, 9:48PM
wtf
how in the hell could any of you say that looks cartoony, what the flying fuck are you talking about? i've never seen anything like that ever in my life. go watch the IMAX and tell me that looks like a fucking cartoon.
by smee | August 20, 2009, 3:17PM
wow
wow, is this really the movie getting so much hype. i know it is early and i could have my mind changed big time, but this trailer just doesnt do it for me. little disappointed for now.
by THL | August 20, 2009, 2:01PM
Aquaman!
No movies since Titanic? You all seem to have forgotten about Aquaman. That Trident fight with Poseidon was spectacular!

Pulled! Damn it!

Alright, alright, catch a breath, should be back up shortly.
by cress | August 20, 2009, 1:11PM
People that say this film looks lame are MORONS
I'm sure James Cameron,, who brought us visionary and ground-breaking films such as TERMINATOR, ALIENS, THE ABYSS, decided to make this film because he wanted to make a cartoony or video-game movie.
YEAH RIGHT! ANYONE WHO THINKS THIS IS A MORON!
His past films have been mined for profits elsewhere, by the studios. But he puts out his unique visions, and then hopes audiences will be attracted to it.
The naysayers out there act as if this trailer is a black and white Tex Avery cartoon with no sound.
Watch the damn film before dismissing it. And every moron knows that the FX in a trailer is not the final product released in theatres.

Chances are it will be very good movie.

however, Im sure uber-nerds will only like it if rotten tomatoes critics tell them to and if the critics dont like it, the uber nerds will hate it instead of having their own opinions

AVATAR MOVIE
i waited years to se this trailer, listening to camerons never ending talks about how its the next thing in technology and knowing camerons success with aliens... am dissapointed! extremely.. its more like final fantasy movie.. were did they get the technology to do a brilliant cartoon! he should have hooked up with the japanese :)
by cavemanweston | August 20, 2009, 11:49AM
Holy Shit,
This looks way weird. but good.
by nuclierhamster | August 20, 2009, 11:42AM
hmm
it's the director of titanic, I"m sure he'll give us great characters. and more on this: the fact that the world can take a disney movie seriously (Ie lion king), because of its rich characters and themes, and screw you who don't think so; means that if there are well developed characters, along with a great, already established, base concept, this could be an amazing movie even for those wwho think its cartoony. here's hoping.
by Bunx | August 20, 2009, 11:20AM
waiting for this one...
can't wait :P
by CharlieWaters | August 20, 2009, 11:01AM
Doesnt blend
reminds me of Disneys Treasure Planet disaster. All the hype about new tech, and then Dud!!!
by cress | August 20, 2009, 10:35AM
This looks amazing! Naysayers be damned!
People, this is the first film to ever use new, groundbreaking FX technology during filmmaking.
It is also the first film to use a NEW kind of 3D technology. The last five years have seen more and more 3D films being made, but none have come close to what this will be. Before you start bad-mouthing the film because of the trailer, why not wait to see it first.
by Griffin | August 20, 2009, 10:25AM
nice
looks really good :) screw you all who think the CGI should be better. Here's to a world where the pointlessly negative actually contribute, or judge a man by his efforts and not by what more he could have done. pssst
by Farzan | August 20, 2009, 10:18AM
AMAZING
Looks f*cken amazing. It looks like its going to live up to the hype after all.
by Special-K | August 20, 2009, 9:55AM
Avatar?
WTF? 99.9% CGI 0.1 % actual actors. Big contrast. Cameron just went overboard in the CGI. Could be a whole lot better.
by flabbybuns | August 20, 2009, 9:51AM
You'll See It
I don't care what you guys say, you all know you'll end up seeing it in theaters. ;)
by SirScorn | August 20, 2009, 9:45AM
Ummmm
I'm sorry, but this looks bad. It's Jar-Jar Binks bad.

As others say, it looks to cartoony or to CGI'ish. I can't see this being anything spectacular.

I love how the description above the trailer said that Cameron had to wait until technology caught up so he could realize this dream....what technology...there are Saturday morning cartoons that look just as good.
by randeez | August 20, 2009, 9:39AM
don't know
I don't know what to think after watching that. I will probably see it, but most likely not at the cinemas.
by jack the cat | August 20, 2009, 9:33AM
meh...
What ever happened to good costumes? makeup? special effects? Most of it was reallly good looking, BUT the blue people should have been good costumes instead of that cartoon crapola. Instant kid movie. I'm out.

Hmm....
Travis, look away from the mirror.

BTW, this looks so full of win!

dumb
am i the only one who thinks this looks completely stupid
by doggonahogg | August 20, 2009, 8:33AM
Unsure
Certainly looks cool, but whether it's going to be much of a film or more of an exercise in technology remains to be seen. Still looks a lot like the latter.
by DENISSE | August 20, 2009, 8:33AM
OOH
FANCY!
by snickers | August 20, 2009, 8:31AM
Trailer is good without dialogue
Still looks like videogame cut-scenes, but whatever. I'm sure it won't matter and this movie will make big dollars at the box office.
