Trailer for The Writer With No Hands.
It’s no secret that Hollywood and the military work together; what’s debatable is the nature of the relationship. This is the world British writer Matthew Alford (Reel Power: Hollywood Cinema and American Supremacy) chooses to immerse himself in as he starts an investigation into the mysterious 1997 disappearance of Gary DeVore, a Hollywood screenwriter found in a California aqueduct without his hands. As Alford meets up with DeVore’s widow and an assortment of other eclectic characters, he firmly believes he’ll be the one to uncover the missing details of DeVore’s death. Inspired by the case, Alford tackles the highly sensitive question about the military’s influence in Hollywood and the role of propaganda. Haskell Wexler, famed cinematographer of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, gives his perspective on this intriguing debate. The questions continue to mount.
