  • A personal, honest and empathetic film about feeling home in Tanzania on its 50th birthday.
  • THE TEACHERS COUNTRY is the story of a country 50 years after its independence. It is the story of Tanzania, a country, which was formed by the ideas of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, who sticked to his ideals and never became a detached politician. The film is a retrospect on the development of Tanzania in the past decades told by the stories of people who seem ordinary at the first glance, but are very interesting in what they do and who they really are. One is the single mother Bertha, who is living in Dar es Salaam. Since she has to work all day to cover her living expenses, she is hardly seeing her daughter while she is not asleep. Another story is about Laurent Nestory, who is working as a teacher on Kome Island an island in Lake Victoria without electricity and running water. In the vast dry hinterland of Lake Victoria the film follows Thomas Billingi. The catholic priest enforces the development of this area very pragmatically and with a lot of foresight. As the most important part of the film, the team accompanied Madaraka Nyerere, the youngest son of the famous first president on his way to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro. This serves as a leitmotif of the film and links the episodes with each other. 50 years after the independence of Tanzania on December 9, 2011, Madaraka Nyerere at-tempts to be on top of Tanzanias and Africas highest mountain and remember the struggle for independence which his father was deeply involved in.All the episodes are a genuine insight into the hopes and disappointments, the achievements, failures and problems of the protagonists. They therefore serve as a personal experience for the audience who shares the stories by watching this film.
