In an effort to tap into his original talent, a wheelchair-bound author moves to a rural town, where he befriends a single mother and her three kids, who help reignite his passion for writing.
**Contains Spoilers**The movie starts with Monte (Morgan Freeman), a disabled writer moving into Belle Isle to stay for a couple of months inorder to revive his spirits. He is grumpy with no will to write or live since the sad demise of his beloved wife. His manager keeps calling for him but he persistently ignores and prefers isolation. On the other hand the family next door, consisting of a lady named Charlotte O'Neil (Virginia Madsen), and her three daughters are going through a difficult phase with the recent divorce. The gradual building of acquaintanceship between all these characters in their own special way and that of Monte with the rest of the neighborhood is subtle yet so full of substance. With each day, Monte overcomes his miseries and gets involved with the O'Neil family. He finds his inspiration to write again and plans to move to Mexico as his stay at Belle Isle comes to an end. Some days after his departure, Charlotte gets a text message from Monte saying that he has finally bought the place which truly inspires him which is soon found by the O'Neil family that Monte is actually moving back into his previous house.
