Seven Names. Seven Strangers. One Secret.
Experience the most extraordinary story of the holiday season
'Ben' Thomas (Will Smith) is making a 911 call to report a suicide - his.
Next we see Ben on the phone with a customer service representative for a meat company, the mans name is Ezra Turner (Woody Harrelson). Ben is complaining about how rancid the beef is and how the pork is very low quality. When Ezra types in Ben's name into the computer Ben hears the computer repeat information back and he realizes Ezra is blind. That 'angers' Ben more-so and he becomes very cruel to Ezra to the point of almost making the man cry.
We see that Ben is an IRS employee with flashbacks of himself as an aeronautical engineer. His job is to contact the people who owe the government large sums of money and collect it back. One of his contacts is Emily Posa (Rosario Dawson), a self-employed greeting card printer. He shows up at her house and hears from her neighbor that she at the hospital for more tests. Ben shows up at the hospital and we see that Emily has a heart condition and a 3% chance of living for she has a rare blood type and there are no donors. In the same hospital that Emily is admitted to, we see Ben watching a young boy with leukemia and his mother.
His brother (Michael Ealy) calls him at home, His brother asks him what he is up to, and that it needs to stop. Ben ignores that and instead asks his brother if he's smoking again - he says no. His brother asks him if he by chance took anything while he was staying there, Ben says no but he remembers giving HIM something. Afterward we see Ben moving out of his beach house into a slum motel, taking with him his pet jellyfish.
We see Ben watching a junior hockey coach for underprivileged Latinos. Later Ben catches up with him at the hospital while he is undergoing dialysis, and we are under the assumption it is for IRS purposes. We learn that his name is George and that he needs a kidney.
Ben pays a visit to a child services worker named Holly (Judyann Elder). She is grateful to see him and embraces him. He asks her if she has 'a name for him'. She says yes and gives him the address of Connie Tepos (Elpidia Carrillo), who lives with an abusive boyfriend. The woman tells him to get out of her house and that he has no right to pry, but as he leaves he gives her his cell phone number. Later one night after being beaten, Connie contacts Ben and he gives her the keys and deed to his beach house. She takes her two children and moves in to their new home.
Ben falls in love with Emily and we see that relationship blooming even though she only has a few weeks to live. After a romantic evening that she planned at her place we see Ben's brother ... BEN ... show up in front of Emily's house. We learn that his actual name is TIM, and having stolen his brother's credentials, he has been making himself known by his brother's name Ben. Ben then demands that Tim return his IRS ID to him.
Tim runs off in the rain to his motel and he places a call to Ezra, he says his name is "Ben" Thomas and he's not sure if he remembers him or not, but he called weeks ago and was very rude to him. He sincerely apologizes, and he explains that he had to be certain - Ezra asks, certain of what? - Certain that he is not quick to anger and that he is calm and is worthy - Worthy of what? - Tim explains to Ezra that he just needs to trust him and that he will be receiving a phone call from a man named Dan (Barry Pepper) and it will all be explained.
Tim then calls 911 to report a suicide - his.
Tim draws an icy bath and lowers himself into it, where he then releases his pet jellyfish and is subsequently stung to death. We see flashbacks to Tim, a successful aeronautical engineer, and his girlfriend Sarah Jenson (Robinne Lee) driving down the highway. She is looking at her engagement ring and he is looking at his blackberry while driving. A van with 6 passengers is coming the opposite way on the highway and collides with Tim's car. Both vehicles flipped and Tim was the only survivor.
Emily's pager beeps indicating there was a donor found.
Fast forward we see Emily and Tim's brother Ben sitting at her patio in the garden. She is sobbing and he is showing her photos and telling her the story about when Tim caused the car crash; seven people died: six strangers and his fiancée.
Tim decided on redemption. Tim donated a lung to his brother, and got the "bug" to save the lives of good people. He donated part of his liver to the child services worker Holly. After he 'found' George who we assumed was for IRS purposes we learn he donates a kidney to him, and then he donates bone marrow to the young boy with leukemia, who we find is named Nicholas (Quintin Kelley). And the others, his friend (and executor of his will) Dan is to foresee happen upon his death. Emily receives his heart.
The story ends with Emily meeting Ezra at a concert at the park. She immediately knew who he was - for he had Tim's eyes. They embrace and the credits roll.
