Trailer for Sweet Micky for President which will be screening at the Hot Docs Film Festival.
The Haitian presidential election that followed the devastating 2010 earthquake seemed more like a battle of the bands than a race for president. As controversial musician Michel Martelly, aka Sweet Micky, throws his name into the race, Haitian ex-Fugees member Pras Michel returns to the country to support Martelly’s campaign. Together they transform Martelly’s sometimes scandalous image into that of a savvy politician and—with little to no political experience—go head to head with a corrupt government, civil unrest and a fixed election. And just when things seem like they could not get any worse, Pras’s former bandmate Wyclef Jean also enters the presidential race, making a win for Martelly seem next to impossible. Winner of both the Audience and Jury Prizes for Best Documentary at the Slamdance Film Festival, Sweet Micky for President captures a perfect storm of political maelstrom and unsettled scores as this dramatic race comes to a finish.
