To be a woman trying to make it in the rap game is already a challenge. Imagine being a woman in Iran trying to make it as a rapper. With Iranian society’s conservative and traditional views of how women should behave and with music practically being illegal, it’s a nearly impossible dream. But Sonita, a teenager originally from Afghanistan, won’t let that stop her. Her music engages an empowering stance against her culture’s views and treatment of women, and her goal is to use her talents to change the world. However, it’s not an easy journey. The challenges she faces along the way to accomplish her dreams include defying her family’s wishes for an arranged marriage and a dangerous return to her homeland. Sonita, winner of both the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at Sundance, is an awe-inspiring and nail-biting coming-of-age tale that portrays one young woman’s journey of standing up for what she believes in, even if it means risking her own life.
