Pee-wee's Big Holiday Trailer (2016)
Trailer for Pee-wee's Big Holiday, starring Paul Reubens as the title character.
In the Netflix Original movie, Pee-Wee decides to leave Fairville, the town he is comfortable with, to make his way to New York... Or die trying.
While many assumed the character of Pee-Wee Herman ended with Paul Reubens' arrest summer of 1991 after the actor was caught er, pleasuring himself inside an adult theater that just happened to have a sting going on at the moment. The media couldn't handle the sensationalism of the event, causing the incident and arrest to get blown out of proportion. Sure, it happened, but many famous actors and producers came to support Reuben instead of blasting him.
Reuben showed some strong resolve by shortly after appearing on the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards in character and, instead of getting booed off stage, his line, "Heard any good jokes lately?," earned him a standing ovation. That takes balls! Censored balls, but balls just the same.
And, no, the Pee-Wee Herman franchise was not cancelled because of the incident. The franchise was already in reruns. Though he didn't have Pee-Wee, Reubens' career continued on just fine, keeping busy year to year while landing the great role of Derek Foreal in Blow.
Though Pee-Wee Herman was during my time, I was never much of a fan of the show or the resulting films. Considering that's it has been 3 decades since the character's prime, it's fairly impressive that Pee-Wee looks [mostly] unchanged -- at least until the close-ups -- with his energy being unfazed by the extended hiatus. While I'd never see this film in theaters, Netflix will land Pee-Wee's Big Holiday a larger audience it wouldn't have found elsewhere; think The Ridiculous 6.
