Trailer for Nuestro Monte Luna.
In 2013, the mayor of Bogotá banned bullfighting, provoking the hunger strike of eight matadors. Two years later, courts overturned the ban, despite protests. Amidst this turmoil, teenage boys train under the watchful eye of retired bullfighter Nicolas in the small town of Choachi, Colombia. The school is a sanctuary for these kids and a chance to escape class struggles. Patiently awaiting an opportunity to test their artistry and technique, they hope that success in the ring will make them role models in society. As they bond like brothers and find beauty in their practice, mounting public pressure condemns their actions as barbaric. Observing these students in their daily routines like a torero studies a bull—respectful, silent, subtle and focused—filmmaker Pablo Alvarez-Mesa fixes his gaze on the big picture through its minor details, capturing a culture in transition and a centuries-old tradition on the cusp of disappearance.
