French author Frédéric Beigbeder adapted his semi-autographical novel for his charming directorial debut Love Last Three Years - although he says he was reluctant at first ("I told the producers that I loved films too much to make one myself."). The film follows the misadventures of a literary critic, Marronier, who tries to hide that fact that he wrote a cynical bestseller denouncing love. Marronier wrote the piece in a fit of pique, or perhaps a moment of despair, when his wife left him for a successful writer. Lady Love has more in store for the hapless scribe, however, when he encounters Alice, an irresistible and inaccessible beauty, who forces Marronier to reconsider everything he believes in. As Beigbeder comments: "Even if my ultimate aim is to prove the title wrong, I can only observe that so far it has always been right!"
