Married on the day of the Chernobyl disaster, Anya (Olga Kurylenko) and firefighter Pyotr are pulled apart when he is drafted to fight a fire at, unbeknownst to them, the nuclear power plant. That is the last Anya ever sees of him. Meanwhile, in-the-know engineer Alexei forces his wife Lena, and young son, Valery, to get out of town, before going back to help in what is a helpless cause. Ten years later, a psychologically wounded Anya is a tour guide at the plant, and Valery, 16, returns to honor the memory of his hero father before going missing.
