Berlin 1941: five friends Wilhem, Friedhelm, Charlotte, Viktor and Greta get together in a restaurant to take leave of each other. Wilhelm, a level-headed highly decorated offi cer has to take care of his little brother who is more interested in literature and philosophy. Greta is heading for a career as a famous pop singer while Charlotte is going to work at a military hospital. Viktor, the son of a Jewish men's tailor, is caught on his way to the railway station to be deported. The experiences of friendship and betrayal, belief and disappointment, illusion and awareness, guilt, responsibility and the deep wish of being dead instead of bearing the absurd killing change their lives forever.

By means of her private connection to the national socialist regime she tries to save her lover Viktor from deportation but she will never know what really happened to him. Victor manages to escape deportation together with Alina, a young and courageous Polish woman.
They both end up in the middle of a guerrilla resistance group where he meets Friedhelm again on the opposite front. But in times of war friendship does not count. Wilhelm loses his faith; Friedhelm evolves into an unemotional Mean Machine who sacrifi ces himself to war and whom his father is fi nally proud of. Charlotte trades her love to Wilhelm to serve the victims of the war on all sides. The fi ve friends never meet again; their promise belongs to an ancient world. War changes everything but in the end they all know what is worth to die for.
