Finding Altamira Trailer (2016)

Trailer for Finding Altamira, starring Antonio Banderas, Golshifteh Farahani, Allegra Allen and Clément Sibony.

In 1879, Spanish archaeologist Marcelino (Antonio Banderas) and his daughter Maria (Allegra Allen) discover seemingly impossible paintings of galloping bison adorning the walls of a hidden cave. The cave of Altamira brings the world together in amazement, drawing people of all types to see the paintings in person. But, Marcelino soon realizes that the art on the walls must be 10,000 years old, earlier than anyone believes possible.

The theory threatens to tear Maria and Marcelino’s family apart while the outside world’s astonishment soon turns to fury and fear. The Catholic Church sees his claims as an attack on biblical truth while scientists prove just as dogmatic and reactionary. Maria’s fairytale world grows darker as her family faces disaster and Marcelino’s discovery is repressed. Only their love for each other can guide them toward redemption as Marcelino fights to spread the truth.

Hugh Hudson has helmed a ton of films, but it has been about fifteen years since he has done his last feature. In regards to Finding Altamira, welcome back to the director's chair.

In order to prep his appreciation for the subject matter, Antonio Banderas was offered the opportunity to visit the real Altamira cave. He declined, but not out of laziness or lack of appreciation. Since the cave had been closed off to visitors since 2002, the actor figured it would be unfair for him to be given special privileges, especially since a replica was available nearby. Plus, every time the cave gets a visit the paintings deteriorate.

While the film claims the story involves drama with the Vatican, that might not have actually happened. Debateable at least.

Finding Altamira Trailer Screencap

Even when Antonio Banderas is starring in a VOD drama, he's still just as captivating as any of his bigger-budget features. The trailer for Finding Altamira is (surprisingly) captivating, even if the story won't exactly resonate with the common moviegoer. The story of the Altamira cave is an interesting one, it just sucks that the film had to embellish some details to up the drama.

Perhaps you'll want to stick with Wikipedia for the facts, and then the movie for the drama. Considering that this historical feature won't be getting a wide release, it is understandable that Samuel Goldwyn is doing simultaneous VOD. I choose to be patient and hold out for Netflix or Amazon.
