Villains We Love: Sweeney Todd

Thursday, October 1, 2009 12:28 PM | From Cinematical

If you pressed me to pick my favorite slasher, I would pick the one who wears a cravat and sponsors a recycling program. He may not be as physically terrorizing as Jason, Freddy, or Michael Myers, but Sweeney is just as ruthless. Once he decides that revenge is best served in a hot crust, no one is safe from his blade. Perhaps he's not as creative with his kills as Jason or Freddy is, but he's a lot more poetic. Few slashers are both a serial killer and a Byronic hero, and few horror movies feature a hero who moans over his lost daughter as he opens another jugular.

The blend of the romantic and the horrific is what makes Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street such a delicious story. At its twisted center, the story is all about love. Sweeney is motivated by the loss of his wife and child, Mrs. Lovett assists him because she's always loved him, Judge Turpin is twisted by love and lust for Johanna, and the tender romance of Johanna and Anthony helps bring it all to an even bloodier denouement.

Combine its Gothic romance with its cheery tunes (cannibalism, rape, child abuse, alcoholism, and insanity have never been so catchy!) and historical / social commentary, and you have a pretty demented little tale. Am I the only one who watches it, and hopes every single time that once Sweeney dispatches Judge Turpin to his grave, he and Mrs. Lovett will flee London, make a new life together and enjoy lifelong success running a meat pie shop by the sea? I know he and Mrs. Lovett deserved their ugly ends, but Sweeney's seems especially bitter. He may have put a lot of innocent men into pies, but did he deserve such a personal twist of the razor? I think even the Greek playwrights would find that one cold.

FX artist is NOT ALONE directing 1st feature; exclusive images

Monday, September 21, 2009 12:49 PM | From Fangoria
NOTALONETHUMBNOT ALONE, the debut feature from British FX artist-turned-director Tristan Versluis, is midway through its three-week shoot. Though set in 1957 on the East Coast of the United States, Versluis and his cast and crew are shooting in locations around England; he sent along a few exclusive early photos, which you can see below.

Lucy Benjamin, familiar to UK audiences from five years on the BBC soap EASTENDERS, stars as Eli, an emotionally damaged young woman who arrives at an abandoned family cabin with a head full of nightmares and a car trunk full of unburied secrets. Before long, her nightmares turn real and the things that stalk her mind become the walking, talking demons that are found inside everyones soul. Trapped by her own doingor imprisoned by some unseen motion set in action by someone elseEli soon starts to spiral into a reality she has lost control of many times before.

NOTALONENEWS1

With an FX résumé that includes Jake Wests EVIL ALIENS and Adam Masons BROKEN and THE DEVILS CHAIR, plus work on bigger pictures such as SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET and THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: PRINCE CASPIAN, Versluis has a great deal of genre experience. In recent years, he has honed his directing skills with a trio of shorts, most notably the almost wordless I LOVE YOU. Doing my shorts has been a learning curve on how to deal and manage a cast and crew, Versluis tells Fango. Im now taking this knowledge onto my feature, allowing me to shape and refine my storytelling skills.

NOTALONENEWS2

Produced by Andy (THE SCAR CROW) Thompson, the film features production design by Melanie Light and photography by Stuart Nicholas White, both of whom have worked with Versluis on his previous works. The small cast also features soap actors Bill Ward and Kika Mirylees, plus Alexandra (DOCTOR WHO) Moen. Weve still got another 10 days to go, but everything is looking fantastic! Thompson raves. Were really pleased with the production. The mood and landscape of 1950s northeast-coast America is a perfect setting for the chilling horror!

NOTALONENEWS3

NOT ALONE is a haunting, family-based horror film, really, Versluis adds. By which I mean I wanted to make a story as much about atmosphere and horror as character and plot. I have tried to move away from an effects-heavy approach; nevertheless, there are still some tasty effects! This movie reflects a lot which has been residing in my shorts so far, about human personality and how crazy it can be. Only this time, Im just pushing it up a bar higher!

NOT ALONE is expected to wrap principal photography on September 26, and will be released next year. For more on the film, go to its official website.
