Tom Sturridge on Pirate Radio

Wednesday, November 11, 2009 6:24 PM | From CanMag.Com
Pirate Radio is set on one of the rogue ships broadcasting rock n’ roll off the coast of England in 1962. Tom Sturridge plays a young man sent to live on the boat. Of course he comes of age there. Should Sturridge ever be drafted into the Navy, he’s already done his boat training.

Tom Sturridge Boards Pirate Radio
“Everyone’s calling it boat camp like it was some kind of Saving Private Ryan elite naval training,” Sturridge said. “We just slept on the boat for a couple of days and got drunk and watched bad films. It was great. Everyone keeps going, ‘How was boat camp?’ It was great.”

The history of pirate radio boats was news to Sturridge, though the music was old hat. “Nothing. I was completely ignorant to it. My concept of Pirate Radio is very different. The music, I think you’ve got to be born in a cellar to not know about the Stones, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Dylan and stuff. But Richard [Curtis] has a weird freakish encyclopedic knowledge of that music and of that era, so he would kind of flood us tracks all the time. They gave us iPods with everything.” Read Article

Sgt. Rock In The Future?

Tuesday, November 10, 2009 3:24 PM | From Latino Review
A movie based on  DC Comics' Sgt. Rock has been in the works for a while. It seems like new life is being injected into the project's development, by moving the character from World War II and setting the story in the future. Francis Lawrence ("Constantine," "I Am Legend") is attached to direct. Joel Silver ("Die Hard," "The Matrix"), who has been trying to get his made for nearly 20 years, is teaming with producer Akiva Goldsman ("Batman and Robin" yeah, uh oh) to finally throw this on the big screen. Until now, Rock has retained its World War II setting, with Silver and the studio trying to make a big-budget action adventure movie that was a throwback to flicks like The Dirty Dozen, which feature acts of American derring-do.   But a big budget always was an obstacle and, Inglourious Basterds notwithstanding, period war movies have not been in vogue in Hollywood for years, unless it was a more serious contemplation of the subject like Saving Private Ryan. Also, American jingoism went out of style after 9/11; even this summers G.I. Joe movie dropped the toys A Real American Hero tagline and made the action team internationally focused. The studio hopes moving the time period to the future solves the dilemma. So, a WHOLE mess of people have been trying to get this made over the years, including John Milius, and Guy Ritchie. I don't see what moving it into the future is going to do to finally solve whatever problems it was having - in fact it seems like moving the setting would just piss fans of the character off (not that that's ever stopped Hollywood). But since I don't know anything about Sgt. Rock, I can't really say it matters to me. I mean, does anybody care about this title? It seems rather obscure.Click HERE to read the rest.Source: Heat Vision Blog Read Article
