First Word on You Are Next

In the slasher sub-genre lots of things have been tackled, including every major holiday. Halloween, Prom Night, Mother's Day, you name it. Yet according to Declan O'Brien, the one night of the year that hasn't been tapped is Homecoming and that's exactly what he plans of tackling with his latest feature, You Are Next.
"Basically, I was thinking about the genre and all that," O'Brien tells Dread Central, "and there's been Valentines Day and Halloween, but nobody has done Homecoming. You gotta take advantage of that one day of the year no one else has."
Has there really never been a slasher movie about Homecoming? Could that be? For the life of me I can't think of one off of the top of my head, but that seems impossible!
Got one? Tell us about it below or You .... Are .... NEXT!
With The Stepfather growing closer to its October 16th release date the TV spots have begun. This PG-13 horror/thriller unfortunately doesn't have much going for it except maybe the title character played by Dylan Walsh (Nip/Tuck). The script is written by J.S. Cardone who also scripted the Prom Night remake and The Covenant just to give you an idea of how doomed the film is already. Directing is ...
This movie was actually really good. I honesty didn't expect a whole lot from it, kind of thought it was going to be something like Prom Night but it really surprised me. I have not seen the original so I didn't know the storyline and this movie had me guessing for sometime.
There are some jumpy bits which made quite a few people jump, as well as some funny parts,&nbs...
Segregated Proms Are Getting More Play with Jennifer Aniston

It looks like there's a push to reveal the lingering strings of segregation in Mississippi. From HotDocs, I shared word of Prom Night in Mississippi, a great documentary covering Morgan Freeman's attempt to stop the segregated proms in his hometown. Now The Hollywood Reporter posts that Screen Gems is getting ready for a similar account called Holler, which was written by Dana Adam Shapiro, and will be produced by Jennifer Aniston's Echo Films.
Said to be based on true events, the film will follow a bi-racial student who heads back to his Mississippi hometown with his mother. He falls for a white girl, and is shocked when he learns that she can't be his prom date due to lingering segregation. "He soon finds himself the catalyst for change for not only the prom but for the school and entire town." I wonder if he calls up Freeman for help?
Shapiro is the director of the Oscar-nominated Murderball, as well as the environmental short My Biodegradable Heart, so this should mix the romance and drama with a decent amount of social conscience. (It could also have some quirk, if The Every Boy is any indication.) This probably won't kick any segregation-lovers into the 21st century, but at least it gets the story out there. In the meantime, you can check out Prom Night in Mississippi on HBO.
Sometimes producer credits are enough. Jennifer Aniston will team up with Sony Screen Gems to produce Holler. While this usually results in the actress having a title role in the film, this time that doesn't seem to be the case.
Jennifer Aniston Helping Holler
Written by Dana Adam Shapir, Holler centers on a biracial high school student who returns with his white mother to her hometown in Mississippi, where he falls for a white girl. When prom season arrives at the high school, he is shocked to discover that she cannot be his date at the segregated prom. He soon finds himself the catalyst for change for not only the prom but for the school and entire town.
Stuck at Prom, has found - what they think - is a great way to mesh these two truths. They are running a contest for the couple with the best prom dress made entirely out of duct tape and the winners each get $3,000 scholarships.
